SECONDARY => College Counselling => Admisson Policies

Admission Policies

Different colleges and universities have individual application deadlines, and often operate differing admissions policies. These deadlines and policies are clearly stated on the college websites.

It is important that you know application deadlines and decide whether you will apply under a particular policy, and that you include this information on the Selectivity Index form in order that AIS can compile your application documents in time to meet specific deadlines.

Meeting Deadlines

  • You must give the counselor dates of all specific application deadlines. These are available from individual institutions.
  • Application deadlines will be early if you are applying under ED or EA policies, or to UK universities such as Oxford or Cambridge. It is vital that you inform the counselor of the early deadline if this is the case.
  • You must meet all school deadlines so that college applications can be processed.
  • All tests have registration deadlines that must be met, and tests are administered at stipulated times on specific dates. See the Entrance Test Calendar for specific information.
  • It is your responsibility to meet all the deadlines in order that your application, transcripts, recommendations and test results reach the institutions in good time.

Admissions Policies

Early Decision (ED)

  • Early deadlines and early notification of admission decision
  • You must agree to enroll if accepted
  • You may only apply ED to one college (a clear first choice)

Early Action (EA)

  • Early deadlines and early notification of admission decision
  • You are not compelled to enroll
  • You can apply to more than one college under an EA policy

Rolling Admissions

  • College considers applications as soon as it receives them (usually within one month)
  • College continues to accept applications until the class is full

Open Admissions

  • Any applicant with a high school diploma is accepted (usually limited to residents of the US State)

Waiting List

  • A list of students who are not initially accepted
  • Only a fraction of wait-listed students are eventually accepted.
