Admissions Tests for the UK

LNAT

LNAT (The National Admission Test for Law). If you wish to apply to study Law at many universities in the UK, you will be required to take the LNAT. The test is taken after you have applied, but before an interview, and is designed to help identify applicants with the aptitude and skills necessary for success on law degree courses.

It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure they enter for the LNAT and you must include your LNAT entry number on your application forms. This means you must enter for the LNAT test during August of 12th grade before sending in your application forms.

The LNAT test takes place in early September in Lusaka and details of how to register can be found on the LNAT website: www.lnat.ac.uk.

BMAT and UKCAT

Bio-Medical Admissions Test (BMAT), United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). All UK applicants for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Science are required to take one of these tests in late October of the senior year. The UCAS course page for each university specifies which test must be taken.

Please go to the BMAT or UKCAT website for more information and on-line registration, and check for further developments on the websites: www.bmat.org.uk, www.ukcat.ac.uk.

TSA

Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). You may be asked to take the Thinking Skills Assessment test when you come for an interview at competitive UK universities (such as, Oxford or Cambridge). This test is designed to assess critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly relevant to successful study at degree level. It is not subject-specific, so it is used with applicants for a number of courses. Some universities are currently using the TSA to assess applicants for courses including Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Land Economy and Natural Sciences.

More information and examples of TSA questions can be found on the TSA website at: www.tsa.cambridgeassessment.org.uk/TSA

STEP

Sixth Term Examination Papers in Mathematics (STEP). For the majority of applicants for Mathematics in UK, a requirement to take STEP is normally part of a conditional offer. These papers are usually taken at interview. For further information go to:
www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/maths/tests.html

MML

Applicants for Modern and Medieval Languages (MML) to some universities in the UK will be asked to sit a standardized test at interview as part of the selection process. This test forms one small part of the overall assessment of applicants. The test involves reading a short passage in English and answering some questions about it in one of the modern languages you plan to study.

Further information and a sample test are available from the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages website: (www.mml.cam.ac.uk/apply/guideapplyafter.html#test).
