Welcome to Early Childhood

Welcome to Early Childhood at AISLwhere students and teachers work together to create an environment where all students are actively and purposefully engaged in learning. Early Childhood consists of Playschool (ages 2-3), Pre-School (ages 3-4) and Pre-Kindergarten (ages 4-5).  The teachers in these classes are dynamic, experienced in early childhood development and the school’s curriculum and dedicated to furthering the development of each student in their class. With class sizes of no more than 16 for Playschool/Preschool and 17 for Pre-Kindergarten, students are encouraged and supported as they learn and develop.

Children of this age are primarily concerned with themselves and their immediate surroundings. As such, much of the study in these classrooms is based on student driven inquiry though four structured units are taught in both Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten. These include the school environment, communicating feelings, growing things and what makes us unique in Pre-School and families, celebrations, animals and our environment in Pre-Kindergarten.

Learning at AISL is balanced between the intellectual, social and physical. As such, physical education, performing arts and visual arts are an integral part of the Early Childhood classes and are incorporated into these classes on a daily basis. All Early Childhood students also receive Performing Arts from a specialist teacher and visit the Library weekly. Physical Education classes outside the regular classrooms are added in Pre-School and Information Technology is added in Pre-Kindergarten.
