Welcome to Grade 1
Welcome to Grade 1 at AISL where students and teachers work together to create an environment where all students are actively and purposefully engaged in learning. The teachers in Grade 1 are dynamic, experienced in the PYP and the school’s curriculum and dedicated to furthering the development of each student in their class. With class sizes of no more than 18-20, students are encouraged and supported to develop an international mindedness necessary in today’s global world.
Throughout the year, the teachers and students engage in different units of study including the senses, force and motion, personal histories, water, needs and wants and how we communicate. All social studies and science topics for the year are covered within the above mentioned topics. Language arts and math are authentically incorporated into these units where possible and as stand alone subjects where overlap is difficult.
As learning is balanced between the intellectual, social and physical at AIS, students in Grade 1 also attend special classes. They receive two 45-minute sessions of Physical Education and Information Technology each week. Visual Arts and Library meet weekly, V.A. for an hour and Library for 30 minutes. French and Performing Arts are another vital part of the program with students attending two 30-minute French classes and three 30-minute Performing Arts classes every week.
