This past Wednesday, our Grade 4 students, together with our Grade 5s, shared their talents through music, dance and poetry. The Grade 4 students shared that, with Valentine’s Day being last Tuesday, “love makes the world go around” and through their song, ‘Round and Round’, they asked the audience to think about, “What makes your world go around?” The students also explored that we can communicate our wish for peace and harmony by using the power of music as they sang “Shalom Chaverim & Tumba, Tumba”. In honour of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that”, the students sang, ‘This Little Light of Mine’. Also, through an original piece of poetry, the students explored how they hoped to be more caring, reflective people who demonstrate empathy, respect, and love toward all people as part of their unit of inquiry. Thank you to the Grade 4 families who came to support the assembly and a huge thank you to Ms. Melodie Hausman, our Grade 4 and 5 Performing Arts teacher, for making it a wonderful event!

Secondary Office Hours
This is just a reminder to parents. The Secondary Office is open from 7:15‐16:00 on Monday through Thursdays, and 7:15‐14:30 on Fridays. Author Visit This past week we were lucky to have author John Coy on campus working with our secondary students. Since John is a young adult sports fiction specialist, he not only worked on story writing with our kids, but also worked with them in Physical Education classes. We appreciate the great learning experiences John led during his week with us on campus. A special thanks goes to our librarian, Terry Maguire, for arranging the visit. Parent Coffee Morning The next parent coffee morning will be held on Tuesday, February 21 in the Protea Room. The Student Support Services team will hold a session entitled “Secondary SSS Executive Functioning Skill Development in the Home”. We look forward to seeing you there. Teacher Professional Development Day There will be no school for students on February 20. Teachers will be engaged in a full day of professional development and curriculum update and revision. Parent Resource As the final IB exams rapidly approach, I have been thinking about the often conflicting message that we send to our students. We often tell them that it is most important for them to develop into a good person while sending a very conflicting message by focusing so much time and energy solely on academics. As I continue to read The Parents We Meant to Be: How Well‐Intentioned Adults Undermine Children’s Moral and Emotional Development, by Harvard professor Richard Weissbourd, I came upon this excerpt that I thought was interesting and was not only pertinent to parents but us educators as well. Hello leopards!

What I am excited about this week…
1. ISSEA! Congratulations to the scholar‐athletes who participated in last week’s ISSEA Rugby, Swimming, and Basketball tournaments. What a fun weekend! Many thanks to everyone who contributed to these events. From support staff to host families to coaches to the PTA, we could not participate in ISSEA without significant support from the entire community. Special thanks to Mark Hoffman, Christine Moono, Bupe Mulenga, and Chulu Chansa for ensuring that the ISSEA Rugby tournament we hosted went particularly smoothly. You can read more about these tournaments in the Secondary School and Activities sections of this newsletter. 2. John Coy! We are thrilled to be welcoming author John Coy to AISL next week. He will spend the week sharing the joy of writing and reading with our students and teachers. Read more about his visit in the Library and Discovery Center section of this newsletter. 3. ISAZ Teachers Teaching Teachers Conference! On Saturday, February 11, AISL will once again be hosting the annual ISAZ Teachers Teaching Teachers Conference. Open to all ISAZ schools, this conference is the premier professional development experience of the year for independent schools in Zambia. I am honored to report that AISL teachers are running about two‐thirds of the workshops on offer. This is a great way that AISL can show leadership in Zambia and give back to the community. Many thanks to the large planning team made up of teachers, administrators, and support staff from AISL, LICS, ISL, and Baobab. 4. Class Photos! Please remember that yearbook photos will be taken next week. See the Primary School and Secondary Please have a look at the Yearbook photo schedule below to see when your child(ren) will be having their photo taken with their class. This year, a professional photographer, Henri Papier, will be in for the week of 13-17 February to take our photos for the yearbook.
The schedule has taken into account when your child does not have PE days as well as ensuring that our youngest students have their photographs taken early in the day before they have fun outdoors during this muddy season. |
