Admissions FAQs

At AISL, Open day is Every Day.

Parents and students are welcomed and encouraged to come and look around the school anytime. We recommend that you visit between 08:00 and 12:00, Monday to Friday. An appointment is not strictly necessary, but it is worth making arrangements beforehand so that Natasha, our Admissions Manager, can ensure that she is available to meet you. Please arrange by either scheduling a tour or emailing/calling Natasha (admissions@aislusaka.org, +26 0973 937 629).

Tours take approximately 45 minutes and you will be shown around the school and classrooms relevant to your child’s age. Please be aware that where possible, the teachers will try to chat to you, but in many cases they are teaching and cannot be disturbed.

The school is also open during most of the holiday periods for visits, though it is preferable to see the school whilst in session for the best experience.

Applications can be submitted at any time. However, it is recommended that an application is sent as soon as possible due to the fact that there are waiting lists in several grades. A space cannot be reserved until the application paperwork is received.

As you may know, the calendar year at AISL runs from August to July. This guide allows you to see the grade level that we would expect your child to join.

If a parent is paying for the school fees themselves, a 5% discount of tuition fees for the second and subsequent siblings can be applied. However, in order to receive this discount, the parents must apply to the business office.

Once a space comes available, tuition fees must be paid from the date the space comes available, even if the student will not be starting at the school until later in the school year. For students applying for the beginning of a new school year, a 25% of tuition fees must be paid by 1 June to reserve the place for August.

The timings vary slightly depending on grade level.

Primary: Students must arrive at school between 07:15 and 07:25 each morning. 

Students in the Early Learning Center (ELC) are in class from 07:25 to 12:00 every day (See below for information about the 'extended day program' option. 

Students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 arrive are in school from 07:25 to 14:30 from Monday to Thursday. On Friday, the academic day ends at 12:30. After school activities normally begin as early as 14:40 and end as late as 15:40. 

Secondary: On Monday through Thursday, the academic day begins at 07:30 and ends at 14:30. After school activities normally begin as early as 14:40 and end as late as 17:00. On Friday, the academic day begins at 07:30 and ends at 13:00.

ELC Extended Day Program

From August 2022, our Early Learning Center has an Extended Day option, at an additional cost, which provides students the option to continue the school day until 14:30 Monday through Thursday and 12:30 on Friday. As part of the program, students will bring a packed lunch from home or order a hot lunch from our Tuck Shop. Lunch will be supervised by the ELC teaching team on the ELC verandah. After lunch, the students return to the indoor/outdoor discovery area; engage in additional learning workshops, and have the opportunity to attend additional specialist classes until dismissal time.

Over the years, our parents have always been our best advocates in the community. If you have friends looking for an exceptional school, please refer them to us. If they like what they see and enroll their children, we will apply a credit to your account of $1,000 for each referred child enrolled in Grades K-12 and $500 for each child in the ELC. This is our way of saying “Thank You” to our wonderful Parent Ambassadors. 

In order to be eligible for this program one must be considered a self-payer (rather than one for whom tuition is paid by an employer). The referred parent must indicate that you referred them on their application form.

Please note the following:

• Referral discounts are not applicable to siblings of existing AISL students or students who have been previously enrolled.

• The referral discount program is not retroactive and is only valid for newly enrolled students

• Referrals are subject to the usual school admission and assessment policies.

ELC: Our Early Learning Center is staffed with a teacher and an assistant per class. There are two classes in this grade, with a maximum of 17 students per class.

Primary School: The class size for Primary School (KG to Grade 5) is 20 students per class, but may be increased to 22 at the discretion of the Director. 

Secondary School: The maximum class size for the Secondary School (Grades 6 – 10) is 22 students per class, but may increase to 24 at the discretion of the Director.

Grades 11 and 12: The maximum number of students in a Grade 11 and 12 class is 18 and the minimum number is 3. However, once a class has been offered, it will continue until the graduation of the students, regardless of the minimum number.

The American Mission Community Association (AMCA), an association of the American Embassy, operates and manages a bus service for the Diplomatic community. For more information please contact the AMCA General Manager through the US Embassy.

The school also runs its own bus service for non-diplomatic students. For more information about this service, please contact Faith Dube at the school, fdube@aislusaka.org.

In both cases, students are picked up and returned to their own houses. There are buses at various times in the afternoon to cater for those attending after school activities.

The prime-motivating factor for the bus service is to provide the safest bus transportation for our children. There are rules which must be followed in order to fulfill this goal and are available to those applying for the service. It is important that parents discuss these bus policies with their children. Our children must realize the importance of safety for themselves, their fellow classmates, and the bus drivers. They must also be fully aware of the consequences should they fail to follow these guidelines.
