Policy and Criteria
AISL supports the philosophy of inclusion and serves the educational needs of a diverse community of learners in Lusaka from a range of cultural and educational backgrounds. Admission is open to students who demonstrate the ability to access and benefit from a challenging, international, English language education in a mainstream environment. AISL is equipped to provide support for a managed number of students, representing a range of learning challenges, and English language learners based on the school’s enrollment and resources. AISL does not discriminate on the basis of religion, ethnic or national origin, or gender. AISL is committed to implement and improve viable programs to accept, support, include, and celebrate diversity in our community.
AISL admits students with Special Educational Needs who are able to access and benefit from the educational program in a mainstream environment. To ensure optimum student-teacher ratios and service to a high standard, enrollment in Learning Support shall not normally exceed 15% of the enrolment at any grade level. AISL is equipped to provide moderate support for a managed number of students normally not exceeding 5% of the total school enrollment and not more than four moderate students per grade level. If spaces are limited in a particular grade, applicants who have met all admission requirements shall be admitted according to the following priorities:

Waiting Pool
When a grade level reaches capacity, applicants will be placed in the waiting pool and offered a space as soon as one becomes available, based on the admissions criteria outlined in the policy and criteria section. If there are more applicants in a category than available spaces, admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Once a space becomes available, tuition fees will be due from the date the space opens, even if the student will not begin classes until later in the school year. For students applying for the start of a new school year, a 25% deposit of the tuition fees is required by June 1st to secure the place for August.
While the school will make efforts to stay in touch with families in the waiting pool, it’s essential for applicants to regularly check in with the Admissions Manager to confirm continued interest in a space. Failure to do so may result in the removal of the child’s name from the waiting pool.
If a place is offered and the family decides not to accept it at that time but wishes to remain in the waiting pool, the student will be placed at the bottom of the list for their admission category.
Acceptance
Once all application paperwork has been received and relevant assessments have been completed, the application paperwork will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The Committee consists of the Director, Admissions Manager and relevant Principal, along with SEN coordinator, Counselor and IB Diploma Coordinator, if needed. Before acceptance, the principal will arrange a student interview to get to know your child better. Parents will be informed of the School’s decision by the Admissions Manager.
Provisional Admission
All acceptances at the school are provisional for the first semester. After working with the student, the school may determine that the initial grade placement needs to be changed. Further, in rare instances, the school may determine that the needs of the student cannot be met at the American International School of Lusaka. In such instances, the School may be able to assist the parents in finding a suitable alternative education.
Payment of Fees
- Once accepted, a non-refundable payment of at least 25% of the tuition fee must be paid by 1 June to secure a space for the new school year in August.
- If applying for a place during the course of the school year, an invoice will be sent with the letter of acceptance. Payment must be made within two weeks of the acceptance unless otherwise indicated.
- Failure to make payment by the required dates may result in the admission being revoked and offered to another student.
