A Special Learning Experience

6/10/2017

Yesterday my class, 7B, took part in the dissection of a goat's organs. Going into the class most of my classmates were either interested or were not excited at all. Personally, I was kind of interested because I had never done something like this before. Then we went in the the class and saw pieces of some of the internal organs and digestive system. Some people were already wanting to go out, but no one did. Then our teacher, Mr. Heathcote, gathered us around the table and told us what each part was, one after the other.

After each part, he asked us if we wanted to take a picture of it, so we did. Then he asked us if we wanted to touch it, so we did. Most people's immediate reaction was to be disgusted and stop touching the organs.    Touching the internal organs of a mammal made me feel a little nauseous but not enough to make me want to back away from the table. When we got to the lungs, our teacher used a tube to inflate them. Mr. Heathcote allowed students to take turns inflating the goat’s lungs with a tube as well. In the end, walking into the classroom to see an actual digestive system lying on a table was shocking. But it was a special learning experience!
