Amendments to Secondary Distance Learning Plan

10/4/2020

Please note that after review of the past two weeks of distance learning using feedback from students, parents, and teachers, the Secondary Leadership Team has implemented the following changes effective immediately:
  • The workweek for students and teachers is Sunday midnight to Friday midnight.  Modules/Lessons will be posted by Sunday at midnight and drop boxes for student work to be completed during the week are to be set no later than Friday at midnight.  Students and teachers should not work on the weekends.
  • In order to reduce the workload of students, we will no longer follow the 8-day cycle.  Instead, teachers will plan for two classes only each week.  One way to understand this is that all Friday classes have been dropped. Teachers will  continue to follow the time guidelines for these "classes" previously set in the distance learning plan.
  • Teachers may assign drop boxes for assignments whenever they see fit.  However, please note that we will remain flexible and understanding of students' situations and that not all students will be able to make every deadline every time.  Please remember that in extenuating circumstances, the parents of the student must notify the teachers.  Students must still submit all work by Friday midnight even if they missed a deadline earlier in the week.
  • Teachers may continue to use weekly modules posted as an event on ManageBac by Sunday midnight OR may post the first lesson of the week by Sunday midnight and the second lesson of the week by Tuesday midnight.  It is up to the teacher to choose what works best for her/him. If the teacher chooses to break up the module into two posted lessons, he/she will notify students of this change.
  • After great debate, it has been decided that we will not make a move towards fully synchronous learning due to connectivity/power issues in Zambia and the time zone difference between many of our students and teachers.  However, teachers will be looking for ways to provide more face-to-face sessions for individuals, small groups, and entire classes as this seems to have been effective and well received by the kids.
All of these changes have been reflected in the Secondary Distance Learning Plan.
