Eloise, an AISL Grade 11 student, won a prestigious award from the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA).

Eloise won the 2019 AISA Student Service Leader Award and was “Highly Commended” for her work for the Feed the People CSD (Community Service Day) program.

Eloise’s work for Feed the People was nominated because Eloise managed all aspects of fundraising and logistics for the program, which entails preparing and providing lunch for 130+ visiting students from Open Arms, a local elementary school that AISL supports with academic and sports programming every CSD.

In addition, Eloise coached a dozen sixth graders on how to prepare machinery (like the grill press when making grilled cheese-and-tomato sandwiches) and organize a makeshift “kitchen” in one of the Spanish classrooms.  For many students, this was their first time making and preparing food completely independently.  Eloise coached a ninth grader, Deborah De Raeve, on how to take over the Feed the People’s leadership from her.

What set Eloise’s project apart from other nominations was that she was able to sustainably support the Open Arms students and coach her immediate team - all while learning English.  Eloise came to AISL in the tenth grade with no previous English-speaking background.

Mrs. Driekie Smith, our Grades 6-10 counselor, accepted the award on Eloise’s behalf, as she was not in school today.
