What I am excited about this week… 1. The Great Kindness Challenge! The Primary School is abuzz with activity as everyone participates in the Great Kindness Challenge. Please join us by looking for ways you can spread kindness and compassion throughout your daily activities. Read more about this fun event below. 2. ISSEA Rugby! Next week students from the American International School of Johannesburg, the International School of Kenya, and the International Community School of Addis Ababa will be joining us for the ISSEA Rugby 2017 tournament. Rugby games will occur throughout the day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (February 2-‐4). Saturday will include some teams from other Zambian schools as well. Please come and cheer on the Leopards. Many thanks to those who have agreed to host our visiting athletes. We still need to find housing for a few more guests so please consider volunteering to show them some AISL hospitality. Please see the Activities section of the newsletter for more information. 3. Artwork in the Main Office! We are very fortunate to have three pieces of Mwamba Mulangala’s artwork on display in the main office. Please come and enjoy these beautiful works from one of our very talented resident artists.

Semester 1 reports will be released on January 30th . These will include a student’s final achievement level and effort grade in each course plus a whole lot more. Our grading and reporting system, ManageBac, provides a very thorough report card for secondary school students, particularly in the MYP. This depth of information means that some reports will be multiple pages. As a result, we will not be printing them and sending them home in hard copies. Instead, they will be posted to your child’s ManageBac account on January 30th for your perusal.
If you need assistance logging in to your ManageBac account or have not received the report by January 31st , please check in with Secondary School Secretary, Maché Adonis (madonis@aislusaka.org) .
As you know, AISL offers a very broad range of programs, many of which may be new to you. To help all parents understand the many facets of our school, we are offering an ongoing series of information sessions every Tuesday morning from 07:30-08:30. If you can, please plan to join us for a coffee or tea and learn more about AISL. We are proud of our programs and want you to learn more so you can be equally proud that you have made the decision to join the AISL community.
The January 17th session in the Protea Room will be an opportunity to have an informal conversation with our principals. Come along to ask questions and share feedback with Darlene and Ty. Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed the festive season and that your 2017 is off to a great start. Monday’s professional development day provided a great opportunity for faculty teams to collaborate on curriculum development and get ready for the students’ arrival on Tuesday. We are thrilled to welcome four new families to AISL. Please look for opportunities to welcome them and to help them settle into Lusaka and AISL.
This semester promises to be an exciting one. We are getting ready to host ISSEA Rugby, the ISAZ Teachers Conference, and our Visiting Author, John Coy, in February. We will send students to eight different ISSEA tournaments and two language immersion trips from February through April. We will host our own Model United Nations and enjoy the Middle School Musical in March. In April we will celebrate International Day and the 30th Anniversary of AISL. May will bring the Primary School Play and our annual IB Exams. While all of these events keep us very busy, they are all part of providing a world-class educational environment for our students. Please keep an eye on our weekly Leopard’s Tale for more information about each event. What I am excited about this week...
This past Tuesday morning we had a nice turnout at the information session about assessment practices in the Primary School. Parents shared their experiences with assessments and asked thoughtful and relevant questions which guided our conversation. Examples of questions included:
At AISL, we define assessment as ‘the gathering and analyzing of information about student performance and program effectiveness’. It identifies what students know, understand, and can do at different stages in the learning process. Assessment is integral to all teaching and learning. It allows students to understand what they know and what their next steps might be. Also, it provides teachers with information to appropriately differentiate instruction and to track progress over time. Through feedback on assessments, parents understand their child’s relative strengths and weaknesses and how to best support them at home. For specific questions about your child’s progress, please contact your child’s teacher. For general information about assessment practices, please contact our PYP coordinator, Chye de Ryckel. More information is also available online in the Assessment and Reporting Guide. This week’s parent resource is about conflict. Teenagers love to engage in disagreements, especially at home. This resource explains why and how you can deal with it as parents that perhaps have grown tired of it.
