Secondary parents: you might find this recent piece from the NYT on teens & sexting and the conversations parents can have with their teens about it to be a useful read. This article echoes some of the recommendations our library / IT team share often with parents: that it's vital to have on-going conversations with one's child about these important real-world issues, and that one's on-line behavior and off-line behavior should be one and the same.
What I’m excited about this week…
1.Cyrano de Burger Shack Starts TONIGHT! Don’t miss our Secondary School Play: Cyrano de Burger Shack. Show times are at 19:00 on 22 and 23 March and 15:00 on 24 March. Tickets are K50 at the door. Please come celebrate our talented scholar-actors and all the hard work they have put into this production. 2.IB Diploma Program Visual Arts Exhibition! If you have not seen it yet, please make a point to visit our DP Visual Arts Exhibition by Thursday, 29 March. This exhibition showcases the work of our DP Visual Arts students across their two-year course. I know you will be amazed at these students’ artistic talents. The exhibition is on display in the gallery of the Tiyende Pamodzi Theater (PAC). By the way, you can get a double dose of the arts by attending Cyrano de Burger Shack (see above) and then enjoying the exhibition before and after the show. 3.Personal Project Expo, Part 2! On Friday, 23 March from 13:00-14:00, some of our Grade 10 students will be holding their Personal Project Expo in the library. Part 2 of the Expo provides an opportunity for those students who were away at the ISAZ Nationals last week to share their Personal Projects. The Personal Project is a year-long, self-directed project that serves as the culmination of the IB Middle Years Program. Friday’s expo is an opportunity for the students to share their projects with the community. Please come learn about their projects and celebrate their learning. 4.School Store is Moving Online! We understand that many people have trouble visiting the school store during its normal hours of operation. To help with this, we have now created a page on the website that lists all our products and prices and and has an web-based order form. You can fill out the order form, submit it, and then come to collect and pay for your items in the Front Office whenever you would like. Please visit our online store here. 5.Parent-Teacher Conferences! Please plan to meet with your child’s teachers during our Parent-Teacher Conference days on Tuesday and Wednesday, 27-28 March from 13:00-17:00. Classes will end at noon on each day and there will be no ASA’s except for ISSEA practices. Please see the Primary School and Secondary School sections for more information. 6.Deadline for Board Nominations is 26 March! We will be holding elections for the Board of Directors during their meeting on 16 April. Please consider running for one of the four vacancies. To run, you need to be nominated by two members of the parent association (via a short form from the Main Office) and submit a short biography that will be published in the Leopard’s Tale by 26 March. To learn more about being a board member, please read this article. Did you know that AISL is truly an international school? Our student body this year includes children from 42 different countries. The five largest national groups, in order, are from the USA, Zambia, the UK, South Africa, and China. We will be celebrating AISL’s diversity at our annual WorldFest! celebration on Friday, 20 April. Stay tuned to the Leopard’s Tale for more details.
Please consider stopping by the library during parent conference days next week. Ms. Jill Daley, our Primary Teacher Librarian, and Ms. Terry Maguire, our Secondary Teacher Librarian, would love to meet you and share with you information about our library programs & how we support student learning. You are also very welcome to open a parent account if you haven't done so already, enjoy a tour of our space, learn about the virtual library tools we offer, or kick back and relax with a great cup of coffee! We also have plenty of adult fiction & non-fiction and would be happy to recommend great reads for you, too!
