What I am excited about this week…

The AISL Library & Discovery Center would like to develop a collection of Swedish books to support our many Swedish students. If you have any Swedish books that you are no longer using and that are in great condition, please consider donating them to the AISL Library. Additionally, if you would be willing to bring back some new books from Sweden if travelling there this year, please let a member of our staff know.
We have extensive French, Spanish, and Chinese sections (in addition to many other languages) and would like to focus on developing one section a year with the goal of providing our students with access to books in their mother tongues or in languages they are studying. The entire AISL community is welcome to check out books and / or DVD's from our World Language Collection. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel welcome to stop by or email Terry Maguire, Secondary Teacher-Librarian. Have you been meaning to learn Nyanja for a long time? Or have you recently arrived in Lusaka and would like to learn a bit of conversational Nyanja? If so, consider signing up for a 5-part Beginner Nyanja class taught by Uncle Jebby and hosted by the AISL Library & Discovery Center.
In the 5-part class, you will learn basic greetings and practical vocabulary. The emphasis is on spoken communication rather than on written Nyanja. You will also learn about Zambian culture. Uncle Jebby will provide all the materials you need. The cost for the 5-part beginner series is 400 kwacha paid in full to Uncle Jebby during the first class. A small extra fee to cover Uncle Jebby's transport is shared among participants. Classes will be held in the library conference room on Wednesday mornings at 8 am beginning September 6. The dates are: Weds September 6 (8 am) Weds September 13 (8 am) Weds September 20 (8 am) Weds September 27 (8 am) Weds October 4 (8 am) Please sign up here if you are planning to attend. Feel welcome to see or email Terry Maguire (AISL Library) if you have any questions. On Thursday September 7 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm in the PAC AISL is proud to host a screening of the acclaimed documentary Screenagers, which focuses on the technology use of tweens & teens as well as the challenges of parenting in the digital age. The film looks at both positive and negative aspects of being "always connected," and serves as a great catalyst for family discussions about balanced use of technology.
This is a FREE event best suited to students and their parents in grades 5-8, though all are welcome. We encourage parents to attend with their children. Following the 1 hour 10 minute film, those who wish may partake in small discussion groups to share reactions to the film and ideas inspired by it. Staff members from our IT Department and Library & Discovery Center will help facilitate the discussion groups. Please join us on Tuesday morning, 22 August, at 7h30 in the Protea Room for a parent information session on the Middle Years Programme. Though this session is primarily geared for Secondary families new to the MYP, all are welcome. This will be an introduction to the written, taught and assessed curriculum as part of the Middle Years Programme and our MYP Coordinator, Kathleen Bowin, will host this information session. To the AISL Community: The AISL Board of Directors invites you to the school for a welcome drink on Thursday, August 24. The event will last from 1630 to 1800 on the library lawn. Wine, beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and light snacks will be served. This informal event will offer a chance to celebrate projects completed during the break, welcome (and welcome back!) parents, and most importantly offer an opportunity for both faculty and parents to meet and to provide feedback to the board. Please come, please enjoy – and we look forward to seeing as many members of the AISL community as possible! Frank Monticello, Chair of the Board of Directors Some of you may have noticed that we removed the tree at the end of the Primary Sports Field. This was a beautiful tree but, unfortunately, its roots were showing signs of disease and heavy rot. As a result, I had it removed so that it would not present a safety hazard. You may remember that a second tree that once stood next to it actually fell over a few months back. Please know that I do not take tree removal decisions lightly. In this case, although it was a beautiful tree, I felt that removing it was in the best interest of safety for the people on campus.
As you know, AISL is committed to campus security. An important aspect of this commitment is controlling access to our campus. As of August 18th, only vehicles with a current 2017-18 AISL parking sticker will be allowed to pass through the gates. Where possible, please display this sticker in the upper or lower corner of the passenger’s side. Cars without stickers will have to park in the visitor parking spots just outside the Primary School gate.
If you have not done so, please collect your parking sticker(s) from any of the school offices. All families get two free stickers and subsequent ones cost K10. Kindly remove any old parking stickers from your vehicle(s). What I am excited about this week…
Dear Parents, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2017/2018 school year. For PE lessons, children are required to wear the school PE uniform (yellow T-shirt & black shorts) which will or has already been given to them. If you need an extra set, you can purchase it from the School Store. Please ensure that you LABEL your child’s uniform and other items like water bottles and hats. This helps in identifying the children’s belongings. In the event that your child is not well and cannot participate in physical activities, please let me know. Kindly refer to your child’s schedule so that he/she comes prepared on the appropriate PE days.
