What I am excited about this week... 1. Explore Zambia! Across the next couple of weeks all students in Grades 5-8 and half of Grade 9 will venture out on their Explore Zambia trips. These trips allow our students to experience an exciting part of Zambia, bond with their teachers and classmates, and pursue curricular objectives. As you can imagine, these trips bring a very taxing 24/7 supervisory responsibility to teachers. Please be sure to thank them for their commitment to providing these enriching experiences for your children. 2. ISSEA Hosting! As I mentioned last week, we are honored to be hosting this year’s ISSEA Volleyball tournament on 25-29 October. In order to do this, we need to host 140 visiting student-athletes. We are still about 80 beds short. Please help AISL show to our guests the same hospitality that will be shown to our own students when they travel to other schools for ISSEA events. We are asking families to please consider opening your home to two or more visiting students. Please email isseahosting@aislusaka.org for more details or complete the Volleyball Hosting form here.

Dear Parents,
Kindly note that all attendance excusals and absences must now be sent in writing via email, so that we can improve our attendance systems and have an accurate record. Please use the new Secondary attendance email for all future attendance excusals and absences. The email is attendance@aislusaka.org. Please be aware this email is only for Secondary school student attendance records. On Friday, 15 September, our ELC and Kindergarten students celebrated International Dot Day. International Dot Day is inspired by the book, 'The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. This is a global collaborative day that focuses on celebrating creativity, collaboration, and connecting with others. Thank you to Jill Daley, our Librarian, for facilitating this fun event. Below are some photos from the day. Thank you to Claire Potts for capturing these great moments. (image: www.thedotclub.org) WHEN: Monday 25th September to Friday 15th December, 2017 GRADES: ELC to Grade 5 REQUIREMENTS (All items to be labelled): * Swimsuit (girls required to wear one piece suits) * Goggles (optional) Students to them bring only IF they are certain they will use them * Swim cap - this is a MUST have for all students * Towel * Sunscreen/cream * Students must wear their PE kit even on the days they are swimming so that they are ready to do regular PE in the event that swimming is canceled e.g. due to weather. If your child is not well, please send a note. Students with a cough or running nose will be excused from swimming.
With the warm weather settling in, we will be enforcing the hat rule during recess and outdoor after school activities. Students have been reminded over the week to wear their hats during both outdoor play periods and their after school activities. Coaches know that students must have a hat in order to participate in their after school activity. Parents, please make sure your child has a labeled hat with them everyday so that they can fully participate in their day. Thank you in advance for your support with this. The kids have two days off of school. Why??? Is it worth it when you have to arrange for extra child care, transportation to a friend's house or play date, and extra food in the fridge, not to mention the worries of whether siblings have survived the day at home together? Despite these headaches, teacher professional development (PD) days are essential to the growth and improvement of our school.
During the Monday PD, the Secondary Teachers spent the day collaborating and planning to make our Advisory Program something that makes our school distinctive among others. Built around the IB Learner Profile, the Secondary Advisory Program picks up where the standard classroom leaves off, teaching the intangible skills for a happy life and future success, such as social and emotional intelligences, executive skills, ethics, and much more. Our Advisory Program is essential to delivering a holistic education and properly preparing our students for challenges they will face throughout life. During the Tuesday PD, teachers took time to break down components of assessment in education, review latest research on the topic, and began revising an outdated assessment policy. One of the Secondary School's primary focuses this school year is upon assessment and defining a common philosophy, purpose, and policy. The teacher's work during PD contributes to the process of creating a new and improved AISL Assessment Policy by the end of this school year. One of the residual effects of this process is a better understanding by all teachers of what constitutes high quality and effective assessment. So, are two days of school missed by the students worth it? Undoubtedly YES!
Please note that this is an early notice to mark the dates of October 11 and 12 from 1300-1700 on your calendar to visit your child's teachers and learn more about their progress during the Secondary Parent-Teacher Conferences in the library. We encourage all of our families to attend.
A message from the PTA: Looking ahead we will begin planning our annual Halloween Trunk or Treat and Santa's Grotto events. For these events to be pulled off we are looking for parents to get involved and help us organize these fun events. Volunteering will not take a lot of your time but will rather make the organization process easier.
We encourage everyone to get involved! if you are willing to assist us contact pta@aislusaka.org Thursday, September 21st, meet at school at 7:30am and retuning by 12pm.
We will explore different community centers and charities in the community. Spots limited contact pta@aislusaka.org |
