Next Wednesday and Thursday, November 1 and 2, all Grade 10 students will be off-schedule to attend a retreat hosted by college counselor Julie Baldry and DP Coordinator Monica Murphy. The purpose of this retreat is to introduce students to the three graduation pathways offered at AISL - Full IB Diploma, IB Courses, and US High School Diploma - and to start the course selection process. During the retreat, students will learn about how the DP differs from the MYP; visit DP classes; meet either Ms. Baldry or Ms. Murphy 1:1 to discuss their future plans and initial course selections; and begin thinking about post-secondary plans by logging into the Bridge U platform to explore career and university options. Following the retreat, all Grade 10 families are invited to schedule a meeting with Ms. Baldry and Ms. Murphy. In these meetings, we’ll discuss students’ post-secondary goals, confirm graduation pathways, and resolve any questions about course selections. We look forward to beginning the journey towards graduation with you and your child! Thank you to all parents of Grade 10 students who came to last week’s Personal Project Information Session. Hopefully, everyone is a little more informed about the project. I will send out a recording of the session, but here are the slides. Please feel free to reach out to Kim Schumlansky or me with any questions you may have about the Personal project should you want further information.

We have news on the Personal Project front. Congratulations to last year’s Grade 10. We achieved a 100 percent pass rate with an average of 5.32. This is up from last year’s 5.15 at AISL. The worldwide average was 4.05! Six students gained the highest grade of 7. Well done! Students who are now in Grade 11 will receive certificates on November 8th, 2023 at 17.00 - 18:30 in the Grade 11/12 students' PP and EE Celebration. Parents are invited and will be reminded of this date at a later stage. Grade 10 celebrated the end of the MYP last night in style. This occasion where students received theirt MYP awards was a collaborative effort from students and Grade 10 advisors. During the ceremony, students reflected on their ATL skill growth and voted for each other and the winners received learner profile attribute awards. Maps and the Black Caps performed and Grade, Adam, Adil and Amara took turns lead events. This is what Ms. Moss had to say: “Thank you so much for making last night happen! It was a lovely event with our students taking centre stage! They definitely are ready for the Diploma Programme, and more importantly they are coming together as a positive cohort which is so fantastic.” This years MYP award winner is Eleora Michelo. Congratulations!
The MYP award process is this: teachers nominate students and justify why they have nominated students. These students are seconded and further justifications are provided. Then the nominees are voted for. Each year, a Grade 10 student is given the MYP Award. Academic achievement is not a factor in this award. Nominees should be:
This is what the teachers had to say about Eleora: This person is conscientious, and always does her best work. She shows tolerance and empathy for others displaying an ability to work with a diverse group of peers. She is positive, polite, and friendly. She is also humble, kind and thoughtful. And lastly, without exception teachers say she is a joy to have in class. This award goes to Eleora Michelo MAP Testing at AISL
Standardised testing hasn’t always had the best reputation. But here at AIS, students take MAP testing twice a year to give teachers data about where students are at both internationally and in the USA. “MAP is a computer adaptive test, which means every student gets a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions get harder. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier” (NWEA). The tests in Maths, Language and Reading don’t take long to complete. The results highlight student strengths and gaps and teachers can thus gauge where a student is at in their academic development so as to adapt teaching and learning to student need.
