Before we headed into our midterm break, the Grade 2 students welcomed their parents to school for their first Celebration of Learning of the year. As part of their Who We Are unit of inquiry, the students shared their learning about exercise, nutrition, a growth mindset, and other factors which affect our wellbeing. From dancing to headstands to a healthy picnic together, it was a wonderful morning for both the students and families.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our parent information session on assessment and reporting. There was some really great discussion as we shared our approaches to assessment in the Primary Year's Programme. Here is the slideshow for those who were unable to attend. If you have any questions or if you would like suggest a future topic for a parent session, please email our Assistant Principal/PYP Coordinator Simone Lieschke slieschke@aislusaka.org
Integral to students’ learning is understanding where they are now and their next steps. To support this understanding, data collection through formal and informal assessments is essential to all teaching and learning in the PYP. Please join us for a Parent Information Session on Tuesday, 3 October from 7:30-8:30 in the Protea Room to learn more about how we assess learning in the Primary Years Programme. This session will share how we gather evidence of student learning and use that data to inform instruction in the classroom. Simone Lieschke, the Primary Assistant Principal/PYP Coordinator, and Darlene Huson, the Deputy Director/Primary Principal, will jointly be leading this session.
As part of their provocation week for the Sharing the Planet unit, Grade 3 students walked 1.5 Km last week to collect water. After arriving at the freshwater source, students filled water containers, and carried them back to class, where they reflected on their experience. Throughout the unit, they will inquire into the different perspectives regarding freshwater equity and availability. They will also consider their role and responsibility with regard to its sustainability. Below are a few moments from this engaging experience.
Thank you to all the parents who joined our Introduction to the PYP presentation last week. There was some very rich discussion, and it was great to see so many new faces in our AISL community. Here is the link to the presentation.
If you have any questions about the PYP or if you would like to suggest future topics for parent workshops, please contact our Primary Assistant Principal/PYP Coordinator, Simone Lieschke slieschke@aislusaka.org. Excitement was in the air on Tuesday morning as the Grade 2 students got set to launch their water rockets with Mr. Louw. Over the past few weeks, the students have been designing and building their water rocket based on the scientific principles that they have been studying. As part of their “How the world works” unit of inquiry, the students inquired into different kinds of force, the connection between forces and motion, and designs and models that utilize forces to function. On Tuesday, they put these to the test. Watching the rockets launch high into the air was a thrill for both the student who designed the model as well as the other Primary students who came to watch. Thank you to our Grade 2 teachers and Mr. Louw for collaborating together on this amazing inquiry.
Last Friday, our Grade 4 French and Spanish students had a wonderful opportunity to integrate their learning from the 'How we organize ourselves' unit of inquiry with their additional language. Using the French and Spanish expressions that they have learned, the students sold a range of items from artistic creations to yummy treats, putting their entrepreneurial skills into practice. Thank you to all of the students and parents who visited the market.
Last Thursday, our Grade 4 students had their own Experience Zambia opportunity. Working closely with Monkey Orange Crafts, our students learned about environmental sustainability by understanding how monkey oranges can support the local economy in creative ways while protecting the trees that grow them. Our students sanded, cut, carved and painted monkey oranges to create artisan banks, proving to be an engaging day for all of them. This project flowed into an afternoon and early evening of activities connected to their units of inquiry, before having a fun sleep out on campus in our tents. It was a fun experience for everyone.
This week was an exciting week for our Grade 5 students as they showcased their PYP Exhibition with the school, parents, and the broader community. The PYP Exhibition is a milestone event in the life of a PYP student and is the culminating celebration of a student’s learning throughout primary school. For the past ten weeks, the Grade 5 students have engaged in an independent, in-depth, inquiry into an issue of their choice. The diverse range of issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and included animal welfare, early marriage, fast fashion, overfishing, pollution, gender inequality, and access to education; to name just a few.
This year’s Exhibition was connected to the transdisciplinary theme, How We Express Ourselves, and students explored how to express their message and engage an audience with their issue. With the agency to choose their mode of expression, students impressed our community with their originality and creativity when sharing their learning and action through the visual arts, performing arts, and the use of a range of technology tools. The presentations, both in the Performing Arts Center and the Pavillion, highlighted the students’ ability to articulate and demonstrate their findings in creative ways and were truly commendable. They inspired many of their parents, peers and other community members to consider these important issues in new and deeper ways and to take action. The PYP Exhibition was a community event in the truest sense, extending well beyond the walls of the Grade 5 classrooms. Students were supported by their peers, homeroom and specialist teachers, teaching assistants, mentors, administrators, parents, and experts within our local and broader community. Thank you to everyone who came and supported our PYP Exhibition and our Grade 5 students. It was a wonderful celebration of learning and has highlighted how ready our fifth graders are for the transition to middle school. Well done, Grade 5! |
