Ali and EJ have both received acceptances from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto has evolved into Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery, and knowledge creation. It is proud to be one of the world’s top research-intensive universities, driven to invent and innovate.

The University’s students have the opportunity to learn from and work with preeminent-thought leaders through its multidisciplinary network of teaching and research faculty, alumni, and partners. The ideas, innovations, and actions of more than 560,000 graduates continue to have a positive impact on the world.

Both Ali and EJ can take economics through the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto. The Department ranks among the top economics departments internationally (Tilburgh, 2016). The teaching and research of its 73 faculty members span a wide range of fields and cover theory, applied data analysis, and econometric methodology.

Economics is a very popular discipline among undergraduate students. Nearly seventy percent of all students take at least one course in economics during their undergraduate studies, and students earn more credits in economics courses than in courses in any other discipline. The Department of Economics offers a wide variety of programs to undergraduate students, ranging from the Economics Minor, Major, and Specialist Programs to various joint Programs, including the very popular Specialist Program in Commerce and Finance.

Each of the programs to which Ali and EJ applied begin with the Core Program in Economics. It is a flexible program that can be tailored to meet the academic needs of students who possess a variety of long-term goals. Like economics programs everywhere, it is built on a foundation of: Principles of Economics; Microeconomics; Macroeconomics; Quantitive Methods; and Electives.

Ali’s application was to study for the Economics degree. This track requires the student to take the full suite of advanced methods courses, including those from the mathematical stream. If Ali takes this offer, he will be based at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.

EJ’s Economics and Political Science track will take place at the University’s St. George’s campus, In addition to studying Economics, EJ can take a joint major in Political Science. This typically covers political theory, Canadian government, international relations, and the politics of societies that are industrialized, developing, and in transition. Many courses deal with issues such as, environmental politics, diversity, peace and conflict, globalization, which cut across academic fields. Studies in Political Science provide students with a good grounding in one of the chief social science disciplines and an opportunity to explore the issues that confront us as individuals, groups, societies, and on the international level. www.utoronto.ca
