College News - Katie

12/2/2020

PictureMBChB Medicine
After taking the Bio-Medical Admissions Test and engaging in assessment days at the universities over the vacation, Katie has learned recently that she has been accepted to two universities in the UK to study for the MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).

On this medical degree course Katie will study key subject areas including medical sciences, clinical skills, ethics, and professionalism, with frequent visits to hospitals and general practices. Katie will cover clinical cases to put her learning into context.

In the final years Katie will gain clinical experience through placements in clinical base units. She will undergo a series of rotations, clerkships, assistantships, and placements that cover all relevant areas of medicine and surgery. There is an emphasis on professional development, student choice, and hospital- and community- based medicine. This develops specialist knowledge, skills, and professional behaviour, preparing Katie for her future career as a doctor.

University of Edinburgh, UK
The University of Edinburgh is Katie’s FIRST-CHOICE university. Edinburgh Medical School is one of two schools at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Established in 1726, it is internationally renowned for both its teaching and research, and The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 places Edinburgh Medical School #24 in the world.

Thanks to its spectacular rocks, rustic buildings, and a huge collection of medieval and classic architecture, including numerous stone decorations, the city of Edinburgh is often considered one of the most lively cities in Europe. Edinburgh also tops the list for atmosphere, positive reputation and desirability, beating off competition from London and York. The capital also has an array of cultural experience, cuisine options, and a variety of shops.

Newcastle University, UK
Newcastle University is a public research university, which traces its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834, and to the College of Physical Science, founded in 1871.

Newcastle is one of the UK's iconic northern cities, with stunning Georgian-era architecture mixed with a visible industrial heritage. Newcastle is also one of the most popular student cities, so students’ will be part of a strong community. The city has great nightlife and shopping, along with iconic landmarks such as the Angel of the North and the Tyne bridge. This historic, bustling city was rated fourth in the UK for city life (Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2019) so there's plenty to see and do. www.ncl.ac.uk
