Both have offered him a place to study for the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computer Science. Simon Fraser University, Canada Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia is situated on three campuses. Established first, in 1965 on Burnaby Mountain, SFU was renowned in those early years as the “radical campus” for student activism. Today, the campus houses the majority of SFU’s world-class academic and research infrastructure. The Vancouver campus opened in 1989 to foster connections with the business community and meet the educational demands of working professionals. Known today as the intellectual heart of the city, it encompasses nine sites that include a multi-venue arts and culture space, a centre for dialogue, and the graduate school of business. SFU’s youngest campus in Surrey opened in 2002, extending community outreach into B.C.’s fastest-growing city where SFU has established some of its most cutting-edge initiatives such as the Quantum Algorithm Institute, the Sustainable Energy Engineering program, and the School of Interactive Arts and Technology. www.sfu.ca University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada Located in the eastern Greater Toronto Area, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, known as Ontario Tech, aims to improve the lives of humans and the planet through the ethical application of technology. This is a key component in its teaching and learning practices, administrative processes, and innovative research projects. Ontario Tech considers that what differentiates it as a university is the notion of not only developing the next tech breakthrough, but also understanding and integrating the social and ethical implications of technology. At Ontario Tech, Jerry can choose to take an Honours pathway or specialize in Data Science or Digital Media. The Data Science pathway responses to the urgent need for data scientists capable of turning vast quantities of data into insight. Students develop the necessary problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, computational, and communication skills to meet employers’ needs. Graduates will be highly sought after in a variety of industries, including health care, finance, and business consulting. The Digital Media specialisation covers topics such as computer graphics, information visualisation, human-computer interaction, machine vision, and mobile development. Students study the underlying technologies used in computer games, educational software, mobile devices, and other forms of digital media through the science that informs it. This option is especially suitable for students who are directly interested in digital media or a related field. www.ontariotechu.ca Bernice now has three further universities from which she can choose to attend. For each of them, she applied for an ‘undeclared’ major. Fordham University, NY, USA Fordham is a Jesuit Catholic university. Its spirit comes from the nearly 500-year history of the Jesuits. It’s the spirit of full-hearted engagement: with profound ideas, with communities around the world, with injustice, with beauty, and with the entirety of the human experience. Fordham is a tight community in New York City, which values and educates the whole person. Much of its Jesuit history and mission comes down to three ideas, which, translated from the Latin, mean roughly: Strive for excellence in everything you do; Care for others; Fight for justice. www.fordham.edu Syracuse University, NY USA With 13 schools and colleges, 200 customizable majors and 100 minors, and online degrees and certificates, Syracuse University provides limitless educational pathways.
