Congratulations to Harry, our first student from the Class of 2021 who has received a university acceptance.
Harry has recently been informed that his application to study for the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at Universiteit Leiden in The Hague has been successful. This three-year course is taught in English.
As a university, Leiden has a strong international focus. It has forged connections with regions in the world, such as Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, and explores these regions from a wide range of perspectives: political, legal, cultural, environmental, and  historical. Leiden’s global expertise is further strengthened by strong links with international partners (NGOs, IGOs, UN organizations) in The Hague, city of international law, peace, and justice.
This is the ideal setting for Harry to take a degree in International Studies. The degree program offers the opportunity to study the issues and effects of globalization by allowing students to focus on one of eight world regions. Students develop expertise ranging from proficiency in one of their chosen region’s languages to an in-depth understanding of its culture, history, politics, and economy. Unique to any humanities program, this BA integrates into its curriculum real hands-on experience of working with organizations and businesses.
Additionally, students develop a global mindset in an international classroom and benefit from the strong career focus that is integrated into this program, including the culminating PRINS consultancy course. In this course, students compete in teams to solve real cases presented by such organizations as Unilever, Workplace Pride, the European Space Agency, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Founded in 1575, Leiden is one of the leading international research universities in Europe. It has seven faculties and a campus in both Leiden and The Hague. Its motto is Praesidium Libertatis – Bastion of Freedom.
The five disciplinary clusters in which Leiden University and the Leiden University Medical Center excel are:
• Fundamentals of Science
• Life Sciences
• Health and Wellbeing
• Law, Politics and Administration
• Languages, Cultures and Societies
The University’s academic partners in the province of Zuid-Holland are Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam. Within Europe, Leiden University works intensively with the other members of the League of European Research Universities.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings places Universiteit Leiden 70th in its 2020 rankings.

Universiteit Utrecht, Netherlands
Shortly after being accepted to Universiteit Leiden, Harry received an acceptance letter from Universiteit Utrecht to study for the Bachelor of Science in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE).
PPE seeks answers to complex questions such as, Why are populist political parties becoming increasingly popular? Is this a bad development? Do we have an obligation to save the natural environment for future generations? How has migration developed, and how has it contributed to shaping health care and education policy over time? What would the economic effects be if we gave all citizens a national basic income?
Though it is possible to answer complex questions like these, it is definitely not easy. To help solve our world’s biggest challenges, we need experts who are able to look at societal issues from various perspectives. Utrecht’s Bachelor of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) meets this need. The programme provides high-level, intensive training for students who are eager to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.
PPE Plus History at Utrecht
The PPE programme at Utrecht University considers political and economic issues from four different perspectives: philosophy, politics, economics and history. The addition of a historical dimension to PPE is something only found in Utrecht, as the university is convinced that understanding the past will help us make better choices for the future. As well as gaining a thorough knowledge of each of these four fields, students will also be trained to combine them to address the world’s most challenging problems. Utrecht University believes that this is the best approach to designing complete and effective solutions.
PPE graduates are able to critically analyse the toughest global problems through various lenses. Not only have they learned how to approach complex challenges, but they also possess the tools to communicate their own point of view and take responsibility for their own personal and intellectual development. As critical and independent thinkers, PPE graduates will be able to take on analytical and leadership positions in both the private sector (e.g. multinationals) and public sector (e.g. in government). Alternatively, they can go on to study for a Master’s degree, a PhD and, eventually, an pursue an academic career.
Founded in 1636 and located in the heart of the Netherlands, Universiteit Utrecht is one of Europe's leading research universities, recognised internationally for its high-quality, innovative approach to research and teaching. Every year, approximately 1,500 international students come to the university to take English-taught degree programmes and other courses. With some 118 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to operate in an international environment from the outset, which is essential for scientists and scholars in this increasingly globalised world. www.uu.nl
Universiteit Utrecht is ranked 75th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.
