Dear AISL Community, This week sees the first full week of on-campus learning and AISL continues to do a remarkable job keeping everyone safe. I read an article this week in the New York Times entitled, “The Swiss Cheese Model of Pandemic Defense: It’s not edible, but can save lives” (apologies to any of our community who are Swiss!) by the virologist Ian Mackay, where he explains the metaphor as many layers of protection seen as many cheese slices that help block the coronavirus. He lays out the layers of both the personal and social responsibilities: Personal responsibilities Masks Avoid touching face Physical distance Hand hygiene Cough etiquette Limiting or avoiding time in crowded spaces Shared responsibilities Clear messages and financial support from governments Ventilation – being outdoors as much as possible Quarantine and isolation when needed Testing and tracing Vaccines The layers are not perfect and all have holes. If the holes align, infection risk increases, but if several of the above layers are combined, the overall risk will be significantly reduced. AISL has taken this multi-level approach from the beginning, thus reducing the risk of contamination during the school day. We intend to continue with this approach with both the hope and belief that we are mitigating the spread of the disease to the very best of our ability. The Campus Reopens for Families at the Weekend On another positive note, as the campus is fully operational with our entire student body, we are now able to welcome our AISL Community members back on campus to use the facilities on the weekends as we did in late April of the last school year. Here are the current guidelines: Use of AISL Facilities during the Weekends Getting To Know You The PTA have kindly organised three sessions next week so I can meet the AISL Community. I urge as many of you as possible to attend. Here is the Meet the Director Sign Up Sheet. I hope to see as many of you as possible. Tea and coffee will be available. Location: The Pavilion on Monday and Wednesday, and outside the Tuck Shop on Friday. Here’s to a restful weekend for all. With kind regards, Dr. Oli Tooher-Hancock Director American International School of Lusaka Comments are closed.
