Dear AISL Community, As I lifted my head from my computer at 7.00 am on Monday, just before going out to meet and greet, I saw a little boy masked up on his tricycle in the ELC playground outside my office happily riding around. It was such a poignant moment as he was the first in-person student I saw as we begin 2022. It was just lovely to see some form of normalcy as so many schools around the globe have had to close more permanently owing to the increased number of cases of the Omicron variant. Indeed, yesterday I heard from one colleague where their younger learners only came back in person for the first time after 664 days! Certainly tough for some and we are undoubtedly most fortunate. But that doesn’t mean we are not also jaded by mask wearing and social distancing, not to mention the numerous PCR tests, etc. It is simply exhausting living in continually ambiguous times. However, we are hopeful that as numbers of Omicron fall sharply in Lusaka, we can begin to slowly and carefully open up a little more. The atmosphere on campus remains one of hope and optimism, with hopefully some humor now and again. Strength, Opportunities Aspirations and Results (SOAR) Analysis for AISL The SOAR Analysis conducted over the first semester is complete and I was able to get some very rich data from our Board, Faculty, Students (Grade 4-12), Admin and Support Staff, and a solid cross-section of Parents. Many ideas and requests came out of this analysis. As a follow up, I am sharing the results with all constituents of our community and would, therefore, like to share this in person with the parent community before giving a summary in the Leopard’s Tale. On Tuesday, 1 February from 7:30 am - 8:30, I will present the findings to parents in the Tiyende Pamodzi Theater. If you are unable to attend, it will be streamed so you can join virtually or watch the presentation at a later time. For those attending in person, tea and coffee will be served outside the Theater from 7:15. Here is the link to the SOAR Analysis Meeting. Yesterday, both Australia and India celebrated their Republic Days. We hope you all had a very special and memorable day of celebration. To any Scots, I hope you celebrated Burns Night on Tuesday, in true style, with the Traditional Address to a Haggis. For a bit of light relief, how about this for a poem! Address to a HaggisFair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy o' a grace As lang's my arm. The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin wad help to mend a mill And for the rest of the Address to a Haggis Enjoy the weekend. It is hard to believe January is nearly over and the rains are certainly here!
With kind regards, Dr. Oli Tooher-Hancock Director American International School of Lusaka “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” Albert Einstein Comments are closed.
