In alignment with the IB philosophy and protocols AISL supports the continuous development of multilingualism of our students. Cummins (2001) suggested that children need to maintain proficiency in their ‘Mother Tongue’ to assist in their development in a second language. He highlighted that skills and knowledge in one language are transferable across languages to benefit both languages. Mother Tongue is defined as ‘the first language that you learn when you are a baby [child], rather than a language learned at school’ (Cambridge Dictionary). Following successful programs in other international schools, AISL has begun a Multilingual parent-led program with lessons located at AISL after school hours. The current multilingual programs include; Swedish, Italian, Portuguese, and Afrikaans with the possibility of a new Mandarin program. Additionally there is a Dutch school that is located at the International School of Lusaka. If you would like your child to be involved in one of these multilingual programs or you would like to find out more information about how to establish a multilingual program for your Mother Tongue please email the contact person below or email the AISL Multilingual Coordinator, Ms Elisa Ingles Velasco.
