Primary Students Take Action

12/11/2019

Last Friday, some of our Grade 4 students fundraised during the Friday Market. They call themselves the Origami Kids in Action (OKA) and their goal is to raise money for L.A.W.S. and school supplies for kids who might need them. Uma, Miles, Cobey and Ylva became inspired by Ms. Jill last year when she explained her backpack project for children who cannot afford them. That idea motivated Cobey to first try and find ways to help Ms. Jill with her project. Cobey then shared his idea with some of his classmates and they joined him. The idea got even more ambitious not only when they decided to help with Ms. Jill’s project but also when  they included fundraising for L.A.W.S. With Ms. Jill’s help, they organized themselves by choosing a creative name (OKA) and then deciding how they could best take action. All of them agreed that doing origami was fun for them and that they could sell it during our Friday Market to raise some money. To raise awareness about their project, they spread the word by creating a video for our PALS assembly and displaying some posters around school.

During the Friday Market fundraiser, they managed to raise 355 Kwacha. After the event they went to see Ms. Jill to give her the money and decide the best options for sending the money. Together they decided that they will donate 50% to Ms. Jill’s backpack project and the other 50% to L.A.W.S.

Action is a key element of the Primary Year Program. This is a great example of student-led action. Students can take action in many different ways and it can look very diverse for different students. There is no right or wrong way to take action; big or small, when taking action here at AISL, we embrace all of it.

Thank you, Origami Kids in Action and Ms. Jill, for taking action and raising awareness about your project.
