Ms. Chartrand is one of the newer members of the AISL community, only having started teaching French and Spanish here at the beginning of this school year. Her appreciation for languages and the enjoyment she derives from teaching kids is not something she discovered as a teacher, but as a teenager, immersing herself in her language classes and taking up jobs as a swimming instructor and camp counselor for kids. Though new to Africa, Ms. Chartrand is not unaccustomed to traveling, having grown up in Toronto, Canada, and spending her adult life in cities including New York, Moscow, and Singapore. Despite the complete change of pace Ms. Chartrand has encountered here in Zambia, as she is much more used to the hustle and bustle of large cities, she is taking this new experience in stride, enjoying the nature and new experiences she is offered. In her free time, Ms. Chartrand enjoys regular exercise, including dancing (since moving to Zambia she has taken up Soca dance classes), as well as live music, and simply spending quality time with friends. As a teacher but also as someone passionate about languages, Ms. Chartrand hopes to allow her students to not only better their communication skills, but have fun in the process.
