Week 10 of Distance Learning: Secondary

4/6/2020

Dear families,

As the school year draws to a close, students are turning in summative assignments, teachers are giving feedback and calculating final grades, and we’re all planning to work together to reflect on the 2019-20 school year.  Our teachers have planned the following all-school, grade-level, class, and Advisory closing activities.

Advisory for Friday 5 June:
  • Grade 6 students will have a farewell session during which they say farewell to leaving students; this lesson is led by Advisors.
  • Grade 7 students will share their favorite memories from this past school year and reflect on what they learned; this lesson is led by our Counselor and our Assistant Principal.
  • Grade 8 students will share what their highlights from the past year have been; this session will be led by Advisors.
  • Grade 9 students will share their favorite memories from this past school year and reflect on what they learned; this lesson is led by our Counselor and our Assistant Principal.
  • Grade 10 students will share what music they have been listening to and how it’s helped them process their experiences; this lesson will be led by Advisors.

Classes on Monday 8 June and Tuesday 9 June:
  • DP teachers will share mock exams results with students, help them set goals, share resources about learning they can do over the break, and give closure to their lessons.
  • MYP teachers will share in the celebrations for Grade 6-10 students.

Closing celebrations by grade level:
  • Grade 6 on Tuesday 9 June at 17:00 will have a Jamboard/Quiz online party.
  • Grade 7 on Tuesday 9 June at 17:00 will have a Scavenger Hunt, highlights, and Q&A online party.
  • Grade 8 on Wednesday 10 June at 15:30 will share farewell messages for leaving students during their online party.
  • Grade 9 on Tuesday 9 June at 17:00 will have an online farewell party complete with breakout rooms and Jamboards.
  • Grade 10 on Tuesday 9 June at 17:00 will have an online farewell party with jokes, memes, and Flipgrid/Padlet.
  • Grade 11 students are meeting in their individual Advisories with their Advisors to reflect on the past year.

Last Day of School:
  • The Grades 6-10 Awards Ceremony video will be shared on Wednesday 10 June, which is our last day of school.
  • There will be an all-school assembly on Wednesday 10 June.  Details will be shared soon with students.
  • Report cards will be released for all leaving students who have returned all resources and all returning students who have returned library books.  Returning students may keep their laptops and iPads over the break; Grade 11 students may continue using their textbooks over the break.

Thank you.
Finally, after eleven weeks of Distance Learning, a format that was tweaked and refined over the past two and half months, we are very curious to hear your feedback on how the experience was for your family and child. We would like to ask each of you to complete this brief survey reflecting on our Distance Learning 2.0 program. Thank you for your time.

As always, thank you for your continued feedback and support to help us ensure that every student thrives.  We appreciate the idea sharing, suggestions, and questions that help us reflect on teaching practices so that we can make sure that every student is successful.  Thank you for being our partners in student learning.

Kind regards,
Ty Smeins, Secondary Principal
Sheila Seiler, Secondary Assistant Principal
