Dear parents, Another week is almost in the books, and we are yet another week closer to the end of the school year. This time of year is truly strange for schools. You still have all of the educational and social functions of a school operating at full capacity, yet there is a sense that you also need to be preparing for the future. It feels like you have one foot in one year, and one foot in the next. A temporal hokey-pokey if you will. So, while we at the Secondary school are devoting quite a lot of time and brainpower to planning for the 2021-2022 school year, we also want to pay proper homage to this year, and specifically to our Leopards who are entering their last month at AISL. DP exams are in full swing, and graduation is just around the corner. In a mere two weeks and change, on 29 May, our G12 students, some of whom have been with us since the ELC, will be walking across the stage, receiving a COVID-appropriate elbow bump, and leaving as AISL graduates. This group of students deserves a great deal of recognition and praise for their flexibility and ability to persevere through uncertainty, two attributes that will serve them well as adults. No other class has had so much of their high school experience usurped by the whim of fate. And yet here they are, throwing their all into exams, planning for the future, looking forward to their next steps; not with the cynical resignation characteristic of postmodern adulthood, but with hope, and joy, and with the love of life that propels them, hopefully, towards the manifestation of their highest selves. Have a great weekend! Dr. Rick Odum DPGrade 11 Year-End Exams As indicated on the DP Assessment Calendar, Grade 11 students will be writing year-end exams between May 24 and 28. To allow or revision time, they will have no regularly scheduled classes during this week. Students are free to come to campus to study, or to stay at home if they prefer. Students will complete a written exam in all of their subjects except in Group 1 (Language and Literature) and Group 6 (Arts). For Group 1, instead of a written exam they’ll be completing their Individual Oral; these will be scheduled individually between May 24 and June 5. Students in Visual Arts and Music have a regular DP assessment component due this week. All students have been invited to their exams on Google Calendar. The exam times are as follows:
Ms. Baldry and Ms. Murphy will host an online end-of-year information session for Grade 11 parents and students Wednesday 2 June from 19:00-20:00. This session will focus on the DP Assessment Calendar, preliminary predicted grades, and the college application journey. The Google Meet link is here. Grade 12 DP Exams Update Students are now more than halfway through their DP exams, and some students are already completely finished. Well done, seniors! You can view the exam schedule here. Since exams will take place in the Pavilion, we ask that our school community respect the space around the Pavilion by remaining quiet while exams are in session. Students are reminded to sign in at the Secondary Office each morning so we know who is on campus in the event of an emergency. The Library conference room is booked exclusively for Seniors during examinations. In addition, Ms. Murphy’s classroom K1 is available as a quiet study space on Days 1, 3, 5, and 7 (ABCD), and the Chem Lab is available on Days 2, 4, 6, and 8 (EFGH). Many thanks to our Senior Spirit parents for providing treats and hot drinks to our Seniors! These are available in the Secondary Office kitchen for any cold or hungry students as they revise. As a reminder, we have a Frequently Asked Questions page to provide guidance for students and families around the May 2021 examination session. It is updated as the IB provides us with more information. You can submit questions through this form. Finally, students have been asked to fill out a form if they want their AISL transcripts, IB Diploma/Certificates and results to be FedExed to them. Parents and guardians, please remind your children to complete this if you’d like hard copies of these documents. MYPMYP Exams/Timed AssessmentsThis year most MYP subjects have had or will have timed assessments in order to practice exam taking skills in an effort to prepare students better for the Diploma Program. Some subjects will hold Grade 9 and 10 exams/timed assessments between the 24th and 28th May. Students will be advised of the subjects and dates shortly if they have not been already.
