Dear parents, We have had a great week in the Secondary school - the students improved their ability to socially distance without reminding, so they were able to focus on their learning and interactions. Our teachers have enjoyed meeting with you and your children at our parent-student-teacher conferences this week. These conferences are a wonderful opportunity for students to share their progress and learning, and for teachers to support parents in understanding more about what happens in class. We hope that as many of our students can attend and participate in those conferences as possible. Zambia Day - Friday 23 OctoberWe are all so fortunate to call Zambia our home, whether we are long-term residents or we just arrived. We take Kenneth Kaunda’s words, "Tiyende pamodzi ndi mtima umo,” which means “Let's walk together with one heart,” seriously and do our best to walk together and care for each other each day. We are excited to celebrate Zambia Day by taking some time on Friday 23 October to recognize how much Zambia has given all of us. While we are celebrating Zambia Day this year, we are doing so in a more low key way than in previous years. The reason for this approach is that we want to keep everyone safe by not sharing food, bringing in outside performers, or hosting workshop leaders from the external community. We will still show our pride in Zambia by having an online assembly and by wearing chitenge or Zambian colors, so please help your child remember what to wear on Friday 23 October. Save the Date!We host three to six Parent Information Sessions each month to support our parents in understanding what their children are learning and how to support them at home. If you have ideas about Parent Information Sessions that you or others would like to attend, please let our Assistant Principal, Dr. Sheila Seiler, know by writing her at [email protected]. Upcoming Parent Information Sessions: Thursday 29 October 17:00-18:00 - Grade 8 Passion Project This Parent Session is for parents of Grade 8 students and anyone else who might be interested in learning about the Grade 8 Passion Project, which launched this year through the Advisory program. The session will be an information session about the MYP Community Project and how our school has adapted it, in part because of COVID, to the Passion Project. Our MYP Coordinator, Ingrid Turner, and Secondary librarian, Terry Maguire, will host this information session. You can join the session by clicking on this link. Tuesday 10 November 18:00-19:00 - Understanding Student Inattention Why does a student appear to be distracted or disruptive in the classroom, and what can be done to help him or her? Join Chantra Reinman, our Director of Student Services, as she explores the neuroscience of an ADHD brain and shares perspectives from children about what it is like to live with inattention. You can join the session by clicking on this link. Communication We know that this can be a time filled with uncertainties, so please understand that our highest priority is the health and well-being of your children. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at [email protected] and [email protected].
Kind regards, Dr. Rick Odum, Secondary Principal Dr. Sheila Seiler, Secondary Assistant Principal Comments are closed.
