1: Reserve your place
Applications to AISL are submitted through our application portal.
2: Required documents
The school accepts students with mild special needs. However, please contact the school to discuss your child’s needs before making a decision to come to Zambia, as only limited assistance is available. Admissions decisions for students with special needs (SEN) are made on a case by case basis depending on the needs of the applicant and the needs of the other students in the classroom. Copies of psycho education assessments and IEPs must be submitted with the application paperwork. 3: Assessments
In all cases from grade 4 upwards the school will request an assessment of the student. We administer standardized assessments, available online, which measure student skills in Math and English. A writing sample is also required. It is recommended that these tests are taken before a student arrives in Zambia. It can also be taken at the school if necessary, but this may delay a students' acceptance at the school. The Admissions Manager will request contact details of a suitable person at the student’s current school, who will be able to administer these tests. Students in other Primary grades may be required to take additional testing, particularly if coming from a different educational system, or system based on a different calendar year (eg. South Africa and Australia). This testing is usually undertaken once in Lusaka. 4: Acceptance
Once all application paperwork has been received and relevant assessments have been completed, the application paperwork will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The Committee consists of the Director, Admissions Manager and relevant Principal, along with SEN coordinator, Counselor and IB Diploma Coordinator, if needed. Parents will be informed of the School’s decision by the Admissions Manager. Provisional Admission All acceptances at the school are provisional for the first semester. After working with the student, the school may determine that the initial grade placement needs to be changed. Further, in rare instances, the school may determine that the needs of the student cannot be met at the American International School of Lusaka. In such instances, the School will assist the parents in finding a suitable alternative education. 5: Payment of fees

Policy & Criteria
AISL supports the philosophy of inclusion and serves the educational needs of a diverse community of learners in Lusaka from a range of cultural and educational backgrounds. Admission is open to students who demonstrate the ability to access and benefit from a challenging, international, English language education in a mainstream environment. AISL is equipped to provide support for a managed number of students, representing a range of learning challenges, and English language learners based on the school’s enrollment and resources. AISL does not discriminate on the basis of religion, ethnic or national origin, or gender. AISL is committed to implement and improve viable programs to accept, support, include, and celebrate diversity in our community.
If spaces are limited in a particular grade, applicants who have met all admission requirements shall be admitted according to the following priorities:
Waiting Pool
When a grade level is full, a student applying to the school is placed in the waiting pool and will be offered a space once one comes available, according to the admissions criteria outlined above. When there are more candidates in one category than spaces, admissions will be based on a first come first served basis. Once a space comes available, tuition fees must be paid from the date the space comes available, even if the student will not be starting at the school until later in the school year. For students applying for the beginning of a new school year, a 25% of tuition fees must be paid by 1 June to reserve the place for August. Whilst the school will endeavor to maintain contact with families in the waiting pool, it is important for applicants to maintain regular contact with the Admissions Manager, to inform us that you are still interested in a space for your child. Failure to do so may result in the child’s name being removed from the waiting pool. If a place is offered to a student and the family decides not to take the place at that time but wish to remain in the waiting pool, the student will be placed at the bottom of the list of students in their admission category. Class Sizes
ELC: Early Learning Classes are staffed with a teacher and an assistant. There are two classes in this grade, with a maximum of 17 students per class. Primary School: The class size for Primary School (K to Grade 5) is 18 students per class, but may be increased to 20 at the discretion of the Director. Secondary School: The maximum class size for the Secondary School (Grades 6 – 10) is 20 students per class, but may increase to 22 at the discretion of the Director. Grades 11 and 12: The maximum number of students in a Grade 11 and 12 class is 18 and the minimum number is 3. However, once a class has been offered, it will continue until the graduation of the students, regardless of the minimum number. Bus Service
The American Mission Community Association (AMCA), an association of the American Embassy, operates and manages a bus service for the Diplomatic community. For more information please contact the AMCA General Manager through the US Embassy. The school also runs its own bus service for non-diplomatic students. For more information about this service, please contact Faith Dube at the school, fdube@aislusaka.org. In both cases, students are picked up and returned to their own houses. There are buses at various times in the afternoon to cater for those attending after school activities. The prime-motivating factor for the bus service is to provide the safest bus transportation for our children. There are rules which must be followed in order to fulfill this goal and are available to those applying for the service. It is important that parents discuss these bus policies with their children. Our children must realize the importance of safety for themselves, their fellow classmates, and the bus drivers. They must also be fully aware of the consequences should they fail to follow these guidelines. Please complete this form if you are interested in the AISL Bus Service and contact Faith (fdube@aislusaka.org) for more information about bus fees and further details on how to register for the service. Please be aware that the school bus service does get full and early application is essential. |
