WorldFest There was a wonderful atmosphere at WorldFest last Friday. Thank you to all the parents who were able to take time out of their day to participate either in the parade, the assembly and /or the food festival. It was simply magical. Our annual circle of unity was captured beautifully by a drone. Board Elections
A further notice went out on Tuesday about next year’s Board nominations. Here it is again if you are interested in being on the AISL Board. There will be no Leopard’s Tale (LT) next Thursday owing to the break next week. The next LT will be Thursday, 9 May. Secondary Developmental Work Updates (Looking Back - Looking Forward) Thursday, May 9th 7:45-8:45 in the PAC As we look to live our strategic mission to become a compassionate community of innovative and courageous learners preparing for challenges of the future we would like to update our parent community on our development. Thus Grade 5 & Secondary parents are warmly welcome to join our team as we look back on our Secondary journey over the past 2 years and look forward to upcoming initiatives. The Last Quarter of the School Year is Upon Us After the upcoming break next week, we will only have six weeks of the school year left, which tends to be hectic as we finish off everything we set out to do last August and reflect on our accomplishments. It can often be a very emotional time as people are leaving and, although it tends to be very exciting, there is also a sense of loss, leaving a place and especially this wonderful community and country. We are here to support anyone who may need help with their transition as this is a process and not an event. I also ask that we all be kind in our communication with each other, especially on Whatsapp. Words can cause a lot of angst and unnecessary stress. Please remember that everyone is doing their very best each day. Friday Market Tomorrow is Friday Market and the following vendors will be here: Please remember to bring your own containers. Watch WorldFest 2024 Highlights On behalf of the PTA,
Fungai Sandamu-Gueldemann PTA Chair In Language and Literature students explored the Key concept of “Communication” and the Related concepts of ‘characterization’ ‘plot’ and ‘theme’. Students explored how theme is linked to plot and character and that characters develop through conflict. Students worked to build their cooperative learning skills as they worked together in various learning experiences. They read and listened to the play and summarised the scenes in groups. Then individually they summarised the play as a whole in a timed setting. Then they analysed one of the characters they would play in the performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as well as a theme within one of the scenes they were in. After that in their assigned groups, they practiced and performed the play using learned lines and extemporising to show their understanding of the play. Below are some pictures of the performance. Aside from receiving feedback from each other and Ms. Turner, both classes performed to Grade 4 for feedback to improve. Meskerem Zerdo, International Outreach & Recruitment Specialist and NYU Abu Dhabi Global Partner, will be on campus on 6th May.

Monday 6th May, 2024 12:20 - 13:10hrs Room: M2 Last Friday 19 April: AISL hosted the ISAZ U7-13 Jnr Invitational Swim Gala. The day proved to be an overwhelming success with the youngest swimmers from our ISAZ community of schools finally having closure on their season. A huge thanks to the AISL Swim Coaching Team: Nichols, Devalia, Stephenson, Muzyamba, Mualama and Betti as well as the AISL Sports Council who provided such positive support and spirit to the event. Also thanks to you the AISL parents for supporting your student-athletes. See here Photos ISAZ U7-13 Jnr Dev Swim Gala Apr 19 ’24 ISSEA: At the recent Athletics / Activities Directors meeting at AISM, Maputo the updated ISSEA schedule 24-25 was confirmed. This should support those trying out next school year with planning for their respective activity. See here the most up to date: AISL Sport Calendar Jan-June 2024 GoooooOOOO Leopards On Wednesday, G1 celebrated their 'Sharing the Planet' unit of inquiry. Throughout the unit, our first graders explored ecosystems and the ways animals rely on each other and their own physical traits to survive. They also learned how to classify animals based on the same traits. As part of their Celebration of Learning, students showcased their invertebrate book and sculptures that they made in visual art. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate their understanding while also engaging in creative expression. Thank you to all of the families who were able to join us.
BoBAISL was proud to field a team for the first ever Battle of the Books (BoB) tournament on the African Continent. Our brave team of six members battled against four other schools from Abidjan, Addis, Dar Es Salaam, and Maputo in a virtual competition of questions and answers yesterday on April 24th. Our team members read 20 books and met weekly during the lunch break over the last 6 months to discuss and play review games to test their knowledge of the plots, characters, and minor details of the 20 books. In the first 3 rounds of our virtual competition, we placed 2nd to land us a spot in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, we lost in the semi-finals and ended up 4th out of 8 teams overall. We hope to get an even bigger group of Grade 6-8 students together to compete next year. We also hope to convince some other schools to join us in launching a High School level of BoB for Grade 9-11 students. Library HoursThe library is pleased to open its doors to students and parents from:
7:00 until 16:00 Monday through Thursday 7:00 until 14:00 on Friday We are also open the first and third Saturday of every month from 9:00 until 12:00 (unless that falls on a public holiday). Thus our next two open Saturdays are 4 May and 18 May. To celebrate a strong finish to their PYPX projects and a wonderful finish of their time in Primary school, we will be hosting a Grade 5 Social on Friday, 10 May from 17:30-19:00. The social will take place in the Secondary Science dome area where music and snacks will be available for students to relax and enjoy the company of their friends and classmates. To make this event happen, we need some parent volunteers to contribute some snacks as well as decorating and cleaning up. If you are able to volunteer, please add your name to this sign-up sheet. If you have any questions, please send me an email (dhuson@aislusaka.org). Thank you, Ms. Huson What an incredible turnout from the AISL community today as we celebrated our annual WorldFest! The morning opened with our traditional Parade of Nations, representing close to 60 nationalities, with students, parents and grandparents taking part in the ceremony. Students engaged in a variety of cultural activities mid-morning, before moving to the Food Festival, which was an incredible offering of food from around the globe. From the planning committee, to the PTA, to Martina and her staff, this event was made possible due to the collective team effort. Thank you everyone for joining us today. We were so glad to have you here.
In Memory of Sarah Crites Last Thursday evening, we learned of the passing of Sarah Crites, a former AISL Parent. Sarah served on our school board for four years, the last two of which she was the Board Chair (2020-2022). Sarah worked for USAID and was passionate about education for all. She was a brilliant woman and this is a tragic loss of life. She leaves a husband and teenage twins, who are known to many in our community. May she rest in peace. Sarah in Sept 2022 with Sipho Phiri and John Armiger, Charge d’Affaires, US Embassy. The ISSEA STEAM competition here was simply incredible. Thanks to all involved, who like all the other ISSEA ADs, Coaches, and Chaperones, put in long hours over the weekend. The ISSEA STEAM logo was developed by one of our grade 7 students, Osanna, in the design class. How creative and it gave a main signature and identity for this fantastic event. ISSEA Results STEAM : Overall 4th Football: Girls 6th, Boys 5th Golf: Girls Division one champion in both the Gross and Nett categories - Uma. Boys Division 2 Gross category: Cobey came second and Johannes came third in the Nett category. Tennis: Girls came in 1st place, with Noor winning the girls individual gold medal. The Boys Team came 2nd place, with Filip winning the boys individual silver medal. Congratulations all round and a wonderful life memory for all involved. And how’s this for a picture? One of our 6th graders, Kush, played a 12th grader from AISJ in a qualifying round. What an incredible spirit of competition !!! SOAR Results and Strategy Update
Although only four parents attended each session on Tuesday, there was some very rich discussion on this extremely timely and important discussion. Here are the Slides, but it is the conversation around these where the deeper questions and understanding arise. If anyone has any ideas how we may communicate more impactfully, we are all ears. Our world is changing rapidly and we all need to be aware of the changes and adapt with them. PYPX Our PYPXers performed beautifully at their celebration assembly in the PAC last night and later shared their process and final product with their parents. They had delved into significant world issues centered around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Exhibition is the culminating event of the IB Primary Years Program and our learners demonstrated true transdisciplinary learning in their projects and performances. Congratulations to all of them! Earth Day is Coming Earth Day this year is on Monday 22 April. Our Primary WildLife Club Earth Day 2024 are taking action and our learners will be involved in various activities to raise awareness of the importance of all of us playing our part in not only the protection, but the thriving of our planet and the humans who live on it. Valuable dinner conversation. Election general Meeting (EGM) 22 May - Save the Date From the AISL Board Chair on behalf of the Board. Dear AISL Parent Community: Are you a current (or incoming) AISL parent? Will you have a child enrolled at AISL through June 2025? If so, please consider joining the AISL Board of Directors, who will be holding elections. This year there are two (2) positions in the upcoming Election General Meeting (EGM) on May 22. The Board is seeking candidates for the following positions:
Please send a bio, a brief expression of interest, and a headshot photo to board@aislusaka.org by Monday, May 6th. Candidates' bios will appear in the Leopard's Tale on May 9th and 16th. The Board will run elections at the May 22 EGM at 18:00 on the AISL campus. All are welcome to attend. Background: A seven-member Board of Directors governs AISL. The U.S. Ambassador to Zambia appoints two of the Board members, one of whom serves as the Chair of the Board. The five remaining members are elected by the AISL community - or AISL Association - which is composed of parents and legal guardians of students who are enrolled at AISL. Of the elected members, two must be affiliated with the U.S. Government, and three from the AISL parent community (referred to as the AISL Association). Elected Board members serve for two years and are eligible for re-election. The Board annually selects Board officers and committee chairs. The overall role of the AISL Board of Directors is to oversee the strategic direction of the school and support and supervise the Director as she implements the strategic plan and leads the school. The Board provides fiduciary oversight by approving an annual budget and setting school fees. The Board also establishes broad school policy in accordance with the school vision, mission, and core values. The Board accomplishes much of its work through Board committees, which may also include individuals from the broader AISL Association. The AISL Board of Directors holds a minimum of two open meetings and five executive (closed) meetings throughout the school year. The Board holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the first half of the year, and an Election General Meeting (EGM) in the second half of the year. We look forward to seeing you there. WorldFest is Here! Tomorrow is the much anticipated WorldFest Day. Wishing everyone a very special and memorable day. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of organizing this day. What a celebration of culture and diversity. Enjoy every moment! |
