Please know that we have an open door policy and are very happy to share our space. Don't forget that the library is also open from 9:00-12:00 on the first and third Saturday of every month of the school year (unless it's a public holiday) so our next open library day is Saturday, 21 May. We will also have three Saturday mornings during the long break when the library is open. Stay tuned for those dates. Allocating SpaceOn most school campuses, it is often a scramble to find space for different events. With the Pavilion off limits for three weeks due to the IB exams, the library has had some interesting requests. The PTA asked us for a space for the teacher appreciation massages, the SST department asked us for a space for their visiting psychologists to do testing, the G12s asked us for a space to study quietly for exams, the Advisory Teams asked us for a space to run a Rubik's Cube solving activity and a Drop Everything And Read activity, and some MYP classes asked to borrow our board games when we didn't have space for them to come play board games in the library.
Sweet Syllables Spinning through the Sky We had another very successful Poem in your Pocket Day with almost every student, teacher, admin and staff person taking one of the 800+ pockets and poems that were prepared and handed out yesterday, 26 April. Even the stressed G12s preparing to start their DP Exams next week were happy to take a minute to read their poem to others and the ELC students were very excited to hand over the poems and have someone read and re-read their poem to them. Please ask your child to read you their poem if they still have it.
We also have a poetry challenge where students read a line and then try to decide if it was written by a hip hop artist or a classical poet. Stop by the secondary side of the library and take the challenge yourself. You'll be surprised to discover how much Chance the Rapper, ASAP Rocky, and DJ Khaled have in common with the likes of Anne Bradstreet, John Donne and William Shakespeare. In honour of Ramadan and Easter, we have had many of the books from our religious section of the library out on display for check out. Whether you are a Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Atheist, Buddhist, or of another creed, there is no quicker way to spread tolerance and gain deeper understanding than reading about others' beliefs.
Thank You PTA and Families! We had about a dozen families participate in our third book swap of the year. The library staff appreciated your willingness to bring in used books and your eagerness to look over new books. Thanks also to the PTA for helping us advertise and to Shailja for being our table volunteer. In this digital age, it is important that we don't forget the weight of a book in our hand, the rustling sound of turning pages, the dusty, sneezy smell of paper, and the value of seeing ourselves draw closer to the end of a story. Reading online and listening to audiobooks is also encouraged but please don't forget to balance it out and give your eyes and other senses the treat of reading a physical book every so often. Poem in your Pocket Day - Wednesday, 26 AprilBook SwapWeek of CodingThe AISL secondary library is happy to sponsor another week of coding activities from Monday 3 April to Thursday 6 April after school from 14:30-15:30. Students in G6-G12 (and their parents) are welcome to stop by any of our coding stations to play with our DJI Robomasters or do any number of the Hour of Coding activities we will have available. The third quarter of CCAs will have ended so we hope to have many secondary students bring their school laptops or iPads and stop by to have some fun. There will also be a chance for secondary teachers to sign up and bring their classes during the school week to the library. We hope to see you sometime during that week!
Open Doors to ParentsPlease don't forget that the library is open for parents to come check out books or sit and work during school hours Monday through Friday. We are also open the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00 for parents and students. Upcoming Event - Book SwapAt the next Friday market on 31 March, we will have a table set up for you to bring a used book in reasonable condition and swap it out for another used book that someone else brings. For every book that you give, you will get a book coupon and for every coupon that you have, you can take 2 books of your choosing home. The library reserves the right to first choice so if any donated books could enrich our collection, we will keep those books for everyone to borrow from our collection. We are asking the PTA to help us find a parent volunteer to run this event from 12:30 to 13:15 so if you would be willing to sit at the book swap table for those 45 minutes on 31 March to hand out and collect coupons, please contact a member of the PTA or Kim at kshumlansky@aislusaka.org. Upcoming Event - Week of CodingG6-12 students are welcome and encouraged to come to the secondary library with their iPads or laptops to do some fun STEM activities from 3-6 April from 14:30-15:30 when there are no CCAs running. Students can program our DJI robots to complete a challenge or try their hand at a dozen different Hour of Code apps which will help them use and practice different coding skills. During the school hours, teachers can sign up their class to come down as well.
