AISL Promotional Video

6/4/2017

As some of you may remember, the filmmaker Tony Pappa from Conceptually Speaking was on campus in January to create two 4-5 minute promotional videos for the school. One was targeted toward prospective students and the second was targeted toward teachers. His work was guided by a committee that suggested some key items to feature. Other than those guidelines, Mr. Pappa's work was unscripted. We gave him free run of the campus and access to people for interviews and then largely left it to him to decide how to tell our story.

During the week he recorded 210 GB of information and conducted 35 totally unscripted interviews resulting in 3.5 hours of audio content. He then winnowed all that material down to 1450 possible clips totalling 91 GB. From there he created his original cuts of each video, which were 31 and 18 minutes long. He then cut them down further until he got to about ten minutes for the teacher video and seven minutes for the student video. He said that there was no way he could do us justice in the 4-5 minute videos we had originally planned so offered the longer cuts at no additional charge. At that point, the committee got involved again and reviewed the original clips to fine tune some of the content and suggest additional edits.

I think the end results are excellent. They will be posted on the website and on social media. Please feel free to share them too.
Many thanks to the committee: Mr. Redman, Mr. and Mrs. Cottrell, Ms. Mulazzi do Valle, Ms. Coombs, Ms. Chalikulima, Mr. Louw, Mr. Osorio, and Mr. and Mrs. Potts. Special thanks also to Mr. Louw for sharing much of the wildlife and drone footage and Mr. Muyamwa for lending his stentorian voice to the video.
And finally, thank you to everyone who agreed to be interviewed and who welcomed Mr. Pappa to the campus. After his visit, he wrote: "It was a real pleasure working with you and your team there. If I was a teacher, your school and community would be on my short list...My trip to Zambia will be a tough highlight to follow."
As usual, I am so honored and grateful to work with such a warm and welcoming community. I really feel like these videos capture some of that magic.
Thank you.
