Check out the latest news from the Torpedoes Swim Club... What I am excited about this week…
The AISL Board of Directors will hold a meeting on Monday, 21 May at 18:00 in the Protea Tree Conference Room. All members of the AISL parent association are welcome to attend. The items on the agenda are as follows:
Across this year, a group of AISL teachers have met informally after school to talk about best practices related to visible thinking. Visible Thinking, which grew out of an initiative at Harvard's Project Zero, centers around a framework for helping teachers & students become more specific about the type of thinking they are developing and the strategies they are using to hone specific forms of thinking and to make this "visible" through a variety of means. Ron Ritchart, one of the founders of Harvard's Project Zero, recently published a follow-up book related to visible thinking that is called Creating Cultures of Thinking: The Eight Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools (2015). AISL has been championing visible thinking for nearly a decade and offers on-g0ing professional development in this area. Teachers who've been involved in our visible thinking group meet regularly to share stories of how they have used these strategies in the classroom with the goal of strengthening their teaching by learning from each other. The end goal is always to provide a richer educational experience for our students! As many of you are already aware, Wildtracks Lodge already caters for our G5 and G10 Explore Zambia Trips. They are also offering another exciting event this year open to all children aged 10-14: a Holiday Camp from the 15-21 July 2018. Please feel free to check out their Facebook page, read the information below or email paula@wildtracks-zambia.com for more information...! Last year three of our AISL students joined and had a great time! Don't miss this week's FREE audiobook downloads from Audiosync. Each week two free titles are available for download via the Overdrive app to any device. The books are thematically paired and feature excellent YA (young adult) titles for students ages 13+. Titles change weekly and this promotion runs through 25 July. If you need a hand downloading please ask any member of our library team. Happy listening! Dear AISL Community Members, Please take note of the following end-of-year dates: Monday 28 May: all library materials are due (for our annual inventory) Thursday 7 June to Thursday 14 June: holiday checkout (10 items per child): note- holiday checkouts are for returning families with clear records. You are welcome to take materials with you on holiday but will be responsible for returning the items or for the cost of the item if lost. Holiday items are due back the first day of school. If you have lost an item please let us know so we may issue an invoice for payment. We add an additional 30% of the cost of the item to cover international shipping & processing fees. Please be aware that because we purchase library-bound copies meant for heavy use and have them shipped internationally, the prices are higher than what you would see on Amazon. Ms. Conte's Grade 6 MYP Individuals and Societies students have been studying issues of migration for the past several weeks. They have explored push and pull factors related to migration and have researched specific groups from different parts of the world.
Today they had a special guest visit from The Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration, Ms. Annie Mee (also an AISL parent). Ms. Mee asked the students about their learning thus far and helped them to deepen their understanding of issues connected with regular and irregular immigration. She also shared a case study of the recent influx of approximately 20,000 refugees from the DRC, many of whom are being relocated to a new camp on the Zambian side of the border. Ms. Mee helped students to appreciate the vulnerability of irregular migrants who often do not have any official travel documents. Students asked many insightful questions drawing on their study of these issues. As always, we are deeply grateful to the parents in our community who share their rich expertise with our students and help them to explore real-life situations connected with their studies. Thank you, Ms. Mee! If you as a parent would be willing to share your area of expertise with our students, please contact Terry Maguire, Secondary Teacher-Librarian: tmaguire@aislusaka.org. |
