For better or for worse, we are surrounded by technology. We are all becoming more familiar with apps and sites like WhatsApp, Facebook & YouTube and we recognise the benefits of using them to communicate, stay in touch and celebrate each other. However, as well as the positives, social media tools can be used for the wrong reasons too. Help your child to learn to be informed, use social media responsibly, and make good choices so that they choose to avoid potentially hurtful apps/sites... Check out this post from Common Sense Media for a list of current 'popular' sites to avoid and/or be aware of. For a similar list - and some more great advice for staying informed, have a look at this post from 'Metro Parent.' This month’s open board meeting took place on Monday with good attendance from the association. The meeting heard informative updates from the school principals and director, had a presentation on building plans and discussed a proposal to change the cut-off date for entry in ELC through Grade 1 from September 1st to August 1st (for decision next board meeting). There were a number of comments from the association ranging from whether to sell bottles of water in the tuck shop to the format of parent-teacher conferences in secondary school. These issues and the school’s response will be set out in the board minutes. The next meeting will take place on December 11th at 18hrs. Please do come along to learn more about the school and have your views heard.
What I’m excited about…
Save the date! Tuesday, November 21st, Dipoma Programme (DP) parents are invited to attend a Parent Coffee where parents of DP graduates will share their experience, advice, and expertise. The Parent Panel will consist of parents whose children have passed through the IB Diploma Programme, either at AISL, or elsewhere. The purpose of this unique Parent Coffee is to have the opportunity to talk in small groups and ask individual questions about internal assessments, the May exams, study habits, and encouraging self-management for the students. The session will begin with a Panel presentation and break into smaller groups for discussion. We also welcome MYP parents to this session so you can deepen your knowledge about the DP student experience. Thank you in advance to the parent volunteers who will share their stories.
A crowd of 90+ people turned out this past Friday night for our upper secondary Coffee House evening. Once again, we were dazzled by the vast range of creative expression that students shared. The types of expression included poems about loss or social commentary, a cappella musical songs, band numbers, dance, rap, and ukelele pieces (who knew ukeleles could be so hip?). Our secondary students demonstrated the highest level of support and respect for each other, making the coffee house a safe place where students felt comfortable taking risks in sharing their pieces. We're already looking forward to the next one second semester! And middle school students will gather for a coffee house during the school day on Wednesday 22 November.

Don’t miss this weekend’s secondary play!
“Dear Edwina” is a lively and energetic musical that highlights the talents of AISL’s secondary performers and technicians. This family friendly show is a delight for all ages and will have you tapping your toes and humming along. It is a beautiful summer day in PawPaw, Michigan and the neighborhood kids are on their way to Edwina Spoonapple’s garage for the weekly episode of the “Dear Edwina Show” a weekly advice variety show in which Edwina dishes out superb advice to letter writers from around the world. Edwina’s weekly advice variety show has gotten big news today; a talent scout is on her way to check out the show which gives Edwina a chance at filling a now vacant spot at the Kalamazoo Advice-A-Palooza Festival! Everyone is on edge as Edwina is at her bossiest and the big star just broke his ankle and the new kid has stage fright and her siblings get more recognition than her and Scott just can’t keep his focus on the show – the show promises to blow the roof off the garage. “Dear Edwina” runs this Thursday, Friday and Saturday — November 16, 17, and 18th — in the Tiyende Pamodzi PAC. Thursday and Friday performances are at 19:00 and Saturday is a 15:00 matinee. Tickets are 50 kwacha and are available at the door. The Primary Parent Support Group is meeting again this Friday, 17 November, at 7:30am in the Protea room. This week's discussion is focused on the developmental stages of children. Ms. Jenn Caldwell, the Primary Counselor, and Noa Mor will facilitate the conversation. We hope many of you will be there to join us!
Please view this three minute IB video which provides a good reminder of what students in the IB PYP look like as learners, what they learn, and how they learn in an IB school.
