Last Friday, our Grade 4 students shared their artistic talents through singing, acting, creative writing, painting and drawing as part of their Celebration of the Arts assembly. As part of their recent unit of inquiry, How we express ourselves, students wrote original scripts encompassing different aspects of the IB Learner Profile as part of a larger group story. They closed their assembly with a beautiful song, with adapted lyrics, encompassing all of the aspects we value in our learners here at AISL. As part of their special day, each student had a piece of artwork on display in the gallery connected to their unit on beliefs and values. Thank you to all of the families that were able to come out and support the event. Well done to Ms Natalie, Ms Hausman, and Mr Mulangala for helping the students pull all of their learning together over the six weeks.
We had our first two of six secondary coffee houses this past week. Last Friday night our High School Coffee House was held out under the stars on the deck of the Palm Pavilion. This Wednesday our Middle School Coffee House was held out by The Zone area in the middle school. Students shared many forms of creative expression: original songs, poetry, rap (in French, too!), instrumental pieces, stand-up comedy, and more. Students also served as the MC's and DJ's for these events. Coffee Houses give students a chance to develop confidence and poise in front of an audience and to share ideas and creative work. We look forward to the next round, which will be in February. A big thank you to Edwin Kamangala of our IT Department who is always helping us with light and sound for these events and to our maintenance crew for doing the heavy lifting of equipment and furniture.
Musicians from our secondary band ensembles demonstrated their musical skills and knowledge with the 5th-grade classes this week. The 5th-grade students are choosing which instruments they would like to learn this year and asked lots of enthusiastic questions and are eager to follow in the footsteps of amazing student musicians. Our first Pamodzi experience concert for the year will be on Saturday, 21 September at 18:30. Come enjoy the evening with us as we celebrate unity through music with Theresa N'gambi, Zamba Anamela and Ma Africa with their full band. Cash bar available. Tickets on sale in the Primary Office and at the door. Check out the video below for more information about this amazing experience...! Our secondary coffee houses are going into their fifth year as an AISL tradition. Each year, we host 6 secondary coffee houses: 3 for Middle School & 3 for High School. These events provide students with a relaxed, safe space where they can share a variety of forms of creative expression in a supportive atmosphere. We've had a huge range of performances: from ukelele bands to spoken word pieces to dance to improv. Students serve as MC's for the events and we've even had some teachers share original work at a few coffee houses!
We host separate coffee houses for each division so that students are with a group of peers at a similar developmental stage. Note that some content at the high school coffee houses may not be suitable for middle school audiences (though students DO use school appropriate lyrics / words and are always expected to demonstrate cultural sensitivity). We look forward to kicking off the year with our upcoming coffee houses: HS Coffee House (Grades 9-12) Friday 20 September: 19:00-20:30 on the deck of the Palm Pavilion MS Coffee House (Grades 6-8) Wednesday 25 September: 08:30-09:30 at The Zone (by middle school classes facing Tiyende Pamodzi Theatre) We are excited to see what creative work students will share at these upcoming events! If you have any questions, please contact either Terry Maguire, Secondary School Librarian, or Chel Illingworth, Creative Arts Department Head. Congratulations to our incredible students here at AISL for their involvement in the creative arts this year. Our hard-working students travelled to London for ISTA Drama workshops, to Johannesburg to participate in the AMIS Middle School Honor Choir Festival, to Harare for the ISSEA Band and Choir Festival, and to Maputo for ISSEA Art and Drama. Countless students shared songs, original poems, and amazing drama improvisations at our six Middle School and High School Coffee House Open Mic events! Students across all divisions were featured in drama productions this year including “Fame!” “Mutually Assured Destruction,” and “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist,” with our risk-taking students showing off their commitment and skills in song, dance, and dramatic performances on stage and also behind the scenes as directors, stage managers, and light and sound technicians. Visual Arts showcased an extensive range and depth of work by our students in multiple PYP and MYP exhibitions in the theater gallery and the truly outstanding DP Exhibition in the Palm Pavilion. The Tiyende Pamodzi Theater was alive with music all year starting with our Primary Talent Show, year-round Primary PA Showcases, the Pamodzi Experience concert featuring James Sakala, a huge Private Lesson Recital featuring over 50 students performers, the enormous All Choirs and All Bands Concerts, our hosting of the Umoya International Middle School Band Festival, and “Mwaiseni” Lusaka Arts Festival Opening Night Concert featuring Jerome Arab, Namvula, and Wezi, featuring outstanding collaborative performances with our High School Jazz Band and Middle School Choir. We look forward to so much more next year as we host ISSEA Band and Choir and look forward to our visual art, music, and drama students travelling to Madagascar for AMIS Middle School Honor Choir, Namibia for the ISTA Middle School Drama Workshop, Mozambique for the Umoya Middle School Band Festival, and Tanzania for ISSEA Visual Art and Drama! This past Monday MYP grades 7 & 8 students participated in a comedy workshop with members of Barefeet Theatre. Students engaged in several participatory activities designed to help them explore different ways to create comedy on-stage. After the workshop, the three Barefeet Theatre actors performed an improv scene drawing on audience participation to guide the direction of the scene. For Grade 8 students, the workshop formed part of a Language and Literature and Theatre interdisciplinary unit using Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream as the focal play. The statement of inquiry Grade 8 students have been exploring is "Communication through self-expression can sometimes be misinterpreted and can lead to conflict and humor." The actors commented on the high level of engagement our students displayed. An initiative that our Creative Arts Department and Secondary Library have led is the integration of more Zambian artists within our curriculum as a way to draw on community expertise and expose students to more Zambian artists and culture.
Please join us for the AISL All Bands concert on Wednesday the 29th at 18:30 in the Tiyende Pamodzi Theater. Come celebrate our hard-working musicians as over 100 band students participating in 5 different ensembles will perform a wide range of music including classical, jazz, pop, and movie themes. Well done to our cast and crew for another successful Primary play! Friday and Saturday were marked by two outstanding performances of ‘The Adventures of a Comic Book Artist” with full audiences on both days. Our Primary students shared their amazing creative talents through their characters, their songs, and their dances. A huge thank you to Natalie, Dee, Emma, Bridget, Elisa, Janke, Claire and Edwin for making the show a wonderful experience for all. Also, thank you to Mwamba for the great ISAZ art show, displaying work from all of our Primary students. A true celebration of the arts!
What's so special about this semester's Choir Concert?
We are so glad you asked! This concert is building off the "transportation" theme of MS students' recent Solo-Duet-Trio performances and then taking a closer look at where music can take us. It features:
