Digital Citizenship and Other Library Activities

4/10/2021

Digital Citizenship Lessons
Many parents wonder what their secondary student is doing during Advisory. It's a hard question to answer because Advisory can be so many different things. The over-riding answer is that Advisory is the time when admin and teachers can introduce, remind, discuss, and practice many of the soft skills that are vital to a student's academic success but difficult to fit into subject specific classrooms. One of those soft skills is digital citizenship lessons and the secondary librarian, Ms. Kim, has the privilege of being the lead teacher of this program.  Using the Common Sense Media curriculum as a launching program, Ms. Maguire (last year's librarian) and Mr. Potts (ES assistant principal) created a digital citizenship curriculum for grades 6-12 that informs and prepares students to make good decisions about all things digital. This week, the grade 7's had a lesson where they looked at their social media use and explored the ways that social media can benefit and harm them. The students did role plays to recognize red flag situations and brainstorm ways they could be more inclusive and respectful of others online. The grade 11's had a lesson on the impact of social media use as they looked at their chronotypes and how their sleep is impacted by device use. The grade 6 and grade 12 students will start their digital citizenship lessons after the October break and the grade 8 and grade 10 students will begin those lessons in semester 2, after they finish with the community and personal projects which they currently work on during Advisory time.

2020/2021 Poet Laureate

Although we can't invite you into the library to come see for yourself, we are pleased to announce that the framed photo of our 2020/2021 Poet Laureate returned from the framers and is now on display in the entryway of the library. Congratulations to current senior Nkweto Kasolo for her poem entitled Day Six.

And in other news
The grade 8's also come by the library once every 8 day cycle in their L&L classes to Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.). The grade 6's, grade 7's, and grade 10's also have D.E.A.R. in the library once every 8 day cycle either during L&L class or during Advisory as we are trying to keep that love of reading strong in our secondary students.
Grade 8 students stopping by the library to pick up some Periodic Table of Element books to use for their Chemistry reports.
