What I’m excited about this week…

Personal Project Expo! If you missed the Personal Project Expo on Wednesday, then you missed an inspiring demonstration of the powerful learning that takes place at AISL.  The Personal Project is a year-long, self-directed project that serves as the culmination of the IB Middle Years Programme. The Expo provided an opportunity for the students to share their projects with the community. These projects included video documentaries, oral histories, fashion design, sports training plans, boat building, and even a computer program that uses AI to create beautiful music! Bravo to the Grade 10 students for their hard work and impressive achievements. Many thanks to the faculty advisors that provided guidance and to our wonderful MYP Coordinator, Ingrid Turner.

ISAZ National Champs! Congratulations to the U19 Girls Soccer team for winning the national championship and to the U19 Boys for taking seventh place. Our ISAZ U19 Netball team continued their amazing performance by making it all the way to the finals against Chengelo, the reigning champs since 2003. Our girls put up a strong fight until finally being defeated in extra time to take the silver medal. Congratulations to Coaches Kay, Albert, Brian, Mulenga, and Bruce and all of our dedicated scholar-athletes.

ZAMMUN! On Saturday, 23 March, AISL’s Model United Nations Club will host the Zambian Model United Nations conference (ZAMMUN). Our students have worked for months to organize this event, which will be focused on debating solutions to several of the world’s problems. We are expecting more than 200 participants from eight other schools. Bravo to the MUN students and their advisors, Ms. Turner and Mr. Potter, for this ambitious undertaking.

New Look at the Primary Playground! If you haven’t already noticed, we have now removed the wall behind the Primary Playground onto the Palm Pavilion land. Although the boundaries of the playground will remain the same for our kids, I think the feeling of added space makes for an even more pleasant environment. We are still working on smoothing out the transition line between the two properties so it is a bit messy at the moment but please go take a look.

Mutually Assured Destruction! You won’t want to miss our Secondary School Play, Mutually Assured Destruction, by Don Zolidos. This series of one-act comedies has been directed by our Grade 11 IB DP Theater students and includes actors from Grades 7-11. Come enjoy some laughs on 29 March at 19:00 in the Tiyende Pamodzi Theater.

Connecting with the World! On Monday, 18 March, the Grade 2 students went to the Pavilion have a Skype conversation with a meteorologist on the island of Guam as part of their study of weather. This is another great example of the value of having an international staff with myriad connections around the world. Many thanks to Ms. Maguire and Dr. Schwarzkopf for helping to coordinate this experience.
