Global Contexts: Putting you in the picture!

In the MYP there are six Global Contexts. Unit concepts can be placed in context using these Global Contexts and their strands and they help provide a common language for learning. Typically one Global Context is selected for the unit being studied. In this way, students understand why we are inquiring, why this is important and why we care!

For example, if we are studying the concept of ‘compassion’ we could be exploring this through:
  • Identities and Relationships: through the strand of ‘human relationships including families’. Why would we do this? Because human relationships matter! We need to be able to empathise with others in order to truly understand each other, and resolve conflict.
  • Fairness and development: through the strand of ‘access to equal opportunities’. Why would we do this? Because we need to understand that not everyone has the same opportunities and that this requires us to be able to put ourselves in each other’s shoes in order to truly understand what it is like to be in this position.

In order to help Grade 10 students identify a relevant Global Context for their Personal Project, we will be looking at artifacts in advisory on Monday and exploring how those artifacts are connected to each Global Context and a particular strand.
