Internet Challenges at home

18/8/2020

Choosing a reliable internet provider (and a back up or two!) is a challenge worldwide, and even more so here in Africa. This is something that each parent, student and teacher around the world is struggling with, especially through distance learning! Uploading files, participating in Google Meets, accessing Seesaw & ManageBac are all dependent on YOUR internet speed.

Sadly we, at AISL, cannot provide a solution to your home internet connection issues - but we can offer some suggestions of how to monitor and, in some cases, improve your situation:
  • Go to fast.com or speedtest.net (or similar) to check YOUR internet speed (any consistent results over 5mbps should be fine for most school tasks).
  • Move closer to the router especially if there are a lot of walls between you and the router.
  • Turn off/disconnect other devices that could be using the internet, especially streaming services like Netflix and Youtube, video-chats and download services like BitTorrent.
  • You can also try adjusting the quality settings on your streaming service to utilise less bandwidth (reduce from 1080p down to 720p or 480p).
  • Try again at a different time of day. A lot of service providers can experience congestion on their networks during certain “peak” times of the day.
And remember, if you need an answer to a specific issue regarding an activity set in class, or a school device issue, complete this support request and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
