Students at AISL have the wonderful opportunity to participate in a club called Model United Nations (MUN). Tom Potter and Ingrid Turner are incredibly proud to take eleven industrious IB World students to The Hague to debate this week.

They will debate topics such as:

  • Developing effective actions towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons
  • Protecting individual rights to privacy in the digital age
  • Establishing measures to ensure the integration of refugees into society
  • Addressing the global rise of populism
  • Strengthening coordination of efforts to combat human trafficking
  • Measures to combat plastic pollution
  • Combatting the growth of modern slavery
  • The situation in Syria

By taking part in this activity/club students extensively practice their IB ATL skills.
  • Research Skills: Finding, interpreting, judging and creating information; Interacting  with media to use and create ideas and information
  • Communication Skills: Exchanging thoughts, messages and information effectively through    interaction; Reading, writing and using language together and communicate information
  • Social Skills: Working effectively with others
  • Self-Management Skills: Managing time and tasks effectively
  • Thinking Skills: Analyzing and evaluating issues and ideas; Generating novel ideas and considering new perspectives

Students have to research and prepare a position paper (notes and bibliography). They have to devise an opening speech, they have to create a resolution which includes acknowledging the problems around the issue and what has been done in the past to rectify this problem and then create viable solutions for each problem. Students have to debate using a new set of vocabulary and from the point of view of the country which they have been allocated. They then have to debate in a forum!

No wonder we are so proud of them here at AISL!
