On-Campus Field Trip for MYP Gr7 Science Students With Engineer Danny Holmes!

21/10/2020

Mr. Lindstrom and Mrs. Van Rensberg's MYP Gr7 Science students were fortunate to have an on-campus "field trip" experience this past Tuesday with engineer Danny Holmes, coordinated by the secondary school librarian, Ms. Terry Maguire. Mr. Holmes has been the chief water and sanitation engineer working on many AISL campus improvement projects dating back to 2006.

In MYP Gr7 Science, students have been learning about the separation of materials, and as part of this have been exploring waste water distribution. To provide students with a real-world case study, Mr. Holmes showed students four sites located near our science block related to drainage of rain water, grey water (from sinks), and "black water" (from toilets). We looked at drainages, soak-away systems, and septic tanks. We also learned about AISL's vision to have a completely sustainable system in several years' time by managing treatment on-site of all our waste water so that it can be channeled back into irrigation.

After the tour, students had a question and answer session with Mr. Holmes and learned more about STEM careers. Interestingly, Mr. Holmes related that environmental studies go hand-in-hand with engineering careers today. We are very grateful to Mr. Holmes for being so generous with his time to enrich student learning during this unit of study.
