Our Multiplication Answers

In our last Leopard's Tale (and this post here) we encouraged parents to solve the following problem;
  • Mubanga went to the supermarket and bought 13 packs of drink. Each pack has 6 cans of drink in it. How many cans of drink did she buy altogether?
​Students in Grade 4 solved this problem in different ways to highlight the number of strategies that can be used. When working with students, teachers focus on efficient and effective strategies that students could use to solve problems. These strategies are taught in developmental order, with one strategy building on the strategy before. The strategies below can be found in the following stages for multiplication in the Number Framework:
  • Stage 3: using images to solve simple multiplication and division problems.
  • Stage 4: using skip counting either by using materials or imaging in their mind.
  • Stage 5: using a combination of known multiplication facts and repeated addition.
  • Stage 6: using a combination of known facts and mental strategies e.g. doubling and halving, rounding and compensating.
Also attached further below are Number Framework posters that are used to guide teachers and students at these stages.
