12:20 - 13:10hrs Palm Pavilion Grade 12 student, Darya, has won the 2023-2024 award that seeks a student from an AISA school who:
Darya has been involved with international organizations throughout her high school years. On her own initiation, Darya joined both the Letters to Strangers non-profit organization and the School to School International initiative. She became a member of Letters to Strangers in 10th grade (and is still an active member now) and she intends to continue to volunteer when she enters college. The Letters to Strangers NGO strives to advocate for mental healthcare for young people, particularly suicide prevention. Darya’s role is as an Advocate and Grant Writer, but she also wrote the Advocacy Action Guide that is used by advocates around the world. School to School International focuses on change-making among international youth collaborators. For both organizations, Darya has been reviewing and editing educational policies and programs, applying for financial grants, and conducting budget reviews. Remarkably, Darya joined School to School International’s Zambian office when she was in the country on vacation, prior to moving to Zambia. She spent three weeks volunteering full-time for this NGO. Whilst in Zambia, Darya has also been volunteering at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka on the pediatric sickle cell and cancer ward. G11s are finishing outlines and starting to write their Extended Essay (EE)The G11s began their EE journey in Nov and Dec by looking at a wide variety of topics to choose a research question that they would like to answer. From Jan-March, they did research on their topic and organized their findings into an outline which was read and discussed with their EE supervisors. Now they begin the most exciting part of the process which is to start writing the essay. Good luck G11s! May you find good resources, think deeply about the information you find, analyze your argument effectively and write clearly and concisely. Well done to our artists who shared a range of creative pieces as part of their annual Celebration of the Arts assembly. As part of their ‘How we express ourselves’ unit of inquiry, students learned that through shared stories we can learn and connect with each other. The Performing Arts assembly included some beautiful music, dance and drama pieces which, as Dr. Tooher shared, integrated both transdisciplinary and multicultural learning. The movement, props, costumes, narration, xylophone, and call and response components pulled together a rich, holistic performance. In addition, the gallery shared some of their best pieces from visual art as well. Thank you to all of the families who attended. We were very happy to see you there!
Another Semester 2 milestone happened this: our Grade 12 Visual Arts students exhibited their IB artworks. The annual DP Art Exhibition showcases not only students’ skills and talent in creating artwork, but also their critical, reflective thinking as well as their presentation skills. All of our students, together with DP Art Teacher Laurey Nevers, have worked hard to put together this showcase and are to be congratulated for their learning over the past two years.
