ReducingTravel-Related Quarantine Periods Through PCR Testing

9/12/2020

AISL's policy has been that if a student or staff member or any member of their household has traveled internationally or had close contact with someone who has, then we expect that person to stay off campus for fourteen (14) days after travel or the initial exposure. This policy was developed according to prevailing guidelines by the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) and international health experts, including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  After consultation with the Ministry of Health and based on recently revised guidance from CDC, we have revised our policy.  We will now allow post-travel quarantines to be reduced to seven (7) days when they are accompanied by a negative PCR test result, according to the conditions described below.
A student or staff member who has travelled internationally or been exposed to someone who has travelled internationally may return to school through one of two options:
  1. Return to school after a 14-day quarantine upon return to Zambia - no change from before. The day of arrival in Zambia will be considered Day 1. Return to school would be on Day 15 provided there are no symptoms.
  2. Return to school after a 7-day quarantine (on Day 8) provided all of the following conditions are met:
    1. There are no symptoms
    2. All those in the household who travelled or who have been exposed to someone who travelled takes a PCR test on Days 5-7 or later.
    3. The test results are all negative, are documented in writing by the testing facility, and are presented to the school nurse. All tests are at the cost of the family.
