Yesterday in a staff meeting, I spoke to our teachers about recent studies that have demonstrated the value of handwriting in learning retention and gaining a deeper understanding of new concepts.
Technology has brought a great number of improvements aiding learning in the world of education. Access to information and ability to share resources and work are the greatest they have every been historically due to the convenience of the internet. Also, students' ability to demonstrate their learning through innumerable multimedia platforms is an incredible asset. However, when it comes to understanding content and new material, the aforementioned studies have demonstrated that it is better for most students to close the laptop lid and pick up the pen and paper.
So, the next time your child sits down to study for the next big test, encourage them to do more handwriting and less typing to help them with greater retention and memorization.
