![]() Ms. Wallace, an IBDP chemistry, biology and environmental science systems teacher at AISL, has taught at our school for the past 19 years. Though she deeply enjoys being able to interact with her students, watching them grow and seeing the many different paths they take after graduating, she never planned to be a teacher until she was given the opportunity to go to the UK for a year for free postgraduate education. While she was born in Kenya and has ancestors from Northern Ireland, she has spent most of her life in Zambia (excluding her time in a boarding school in the UK) and considers it to be her home. Despite teaching multiple classes, Ms. Wallace finds time for her various hobbies. One of her greatest passions is ethology (the scientific study of animal behavior), specifically of horses, which she is able to pursue as the owner of Lusaka’s Kavallo Equestrian Center. In addition to her fascination with horse behavior, Ms. Wallace is also an accomplished and experienced rider as well as an international coach. Ms. Wallace also has a great appreciation for the environment, seen in her love for Zambia’s nature, which she tries to pass along to her students. Her respect for nature is seen in both her efforts to replant but also in her Weekend Warriors Garden School, where she and her fellow AISL colleague, Misau, train gardeners to properly care for plants. Ms. Wallace’s hobbies extend to acts of service, as she works with an orphanage here in Zambia and provides riding lessons for people with disabilities. Ms. Wallace's biggest advice to her students is that it is essential to remember that there is ample time to make significant choices in life, and it's perfectly okay to make mistakes along the way. Students were out setting up tents on Tuesday and all have now met with the EZ groups. On Friday, parents will be shared via email with our “Communication Sheet” for their child's experience; on which you will find a copy of the presentation, permission slips, Home Base contact specific to that experience and where the Trip Leaders will update you daily by 8:00 pm on the happenings of the day. Please remember that your point of contact is the Home Base found on that sheet: For Gr 5- 6 Ms. Kelly and Gr 7-10 Dr. Odum. A reminder that Friday, June 2nd is normal school day timings. We continue to be indebted to the local organizations who are hosting our students and have worked closely with our EZ team! We are sending this out a day early because of the Africa Freedom Day holiday tomorrow. It’s a nice break in the midst of a VERY hectic week. Tonight finds the Band/Choir combined concert in the PAC starting at 5:30 PM (through 7:30 PM). Friday is the Grade 12 Awards (12:00 PM to 12:45 PM) and the IB Film showcase (in the PAC directly after the G12 Awards). Then, the jewel in the week’s crown, Graduation of the class of 2023 (Saturday, PAC, 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM). As sad as I am to be leaving Zambia, and the AISL community, I am very happy to have seen the class of 2023 through to the end of their journey. I remember them as Grade 10s, happily isolated in portable buildings now long since moved off campus. This is a tight group, a talented group, a group whose high school experience spanned the pandemic, and a group that came through it all victorious. Congratulations to the class of 2023! Have a great weekend! Rick Odum Comments are closed.
