This is Mr. Mark James! He is one of the newest additions to the AISL family, who has joined us this year as a DP Physics, Grade 7 Design, Grade 10 Maths, and the Photography CCA teacher! Like all teachers, Mr. James finds it fulfilling to teach students who are keen to learn and are motivated to create a better future for themselves and he genuinely enjoys learning about students outside the classroom and seeing how they develop as individuals. A true teacher at heart indeed! Previously an engineer, Mr. James’ past experiences have helped shape the way he teaches and interacts with students in the classroom. He believes that his background in engineering helps him bring real world knowledge into the classroom to “give a bit of perspective”, giving students an appreciation for the world around them. This is one of the reasons as to why he became a teacher in the first place!

As a new addition to AISL, he finds the community very welcoming and friendly and he’s really appreciative of the fact that our tight-knit and positive community is so very supportive of one another. Mr. James has already done loads to help out the community like starting a master swimming class to allow more members of the AISL community to have access to school facilities! He also enjoys living in Zambia because of the friendly and hospitable nature of Zambians and believes that Zambia has heaps of potential. As an active part of the organization, Engineers Without Borders, he provides as much support as he can and gives back as much as he can to the local community in Zambia.

During his free time, Mr. James enjoys running, walking his dogs, swimming, riding bikes, and anything sporty! He also enjoys taking photographs, traveling, and he loves to cook! In the future, he would love to see the northern lights and learn how to scuba dive, preferably not at the same time. When asked about giving advice to students, he said that we should always “Seize [our] opportunities”!

As someone who looks up to those who use their resources to help others, he’s done so much in his power and through his talents to give back to the community and help those who truly need it, and we all are very lucky to have such an enthusiastic and supportive teacher at our school!

Fun Fact! For his final year in university, Mr. James and his peers were able to present their models for a research base in Antarctica as a research project to the lead engineer of the Halley VI Research Station!
