Dear AISL Parents, I am delighted to welcome you and your child(ren) to the American International School of Lusaka (AISL) for the 2017-18 school year. AISL is a close-knit school community committed to its vision of helping every student thrive. As stated in our new mission, we are a compassionate community of innovative and courageous learners preparing for the challenges of the future. A talented multinational faculty strives to realize this vision by challenging students intellectually and by supporting their physical, social, and emotional well-being. Working in partnership with parents, AISL strives to help each child achieve his/her academic and personal potential. Below please find some important information that will hopefully support a well-informed start to the school year. As always, please feel free to visit or email me or the relevant principal to share your comments, questions or concerns. Russell Menard Director School Times for the 2017-18 School YearImportant Note: Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 12h00 for the first three weeks of school (August 8-September 1). Beginning on September 4, Kindergarten students will attend school for a full day and will be dismissed at 14:30. New Student / Family Orientation If you are new to the AISL community, please attend the New Student / Family Orientation scheduled on Friday, August 4th in the Tiyende Pamodzi Theatre. Orientation for Primary School, which includes the Early Learning Center (ELC), is scheduled from 08:00-09:30. The Secondary School Orientation for Grades 6-12 is scheduled from 10:00-11:30. Both sessions will include presentations from the Director and Division Principal and tours of the campus. All Primary School students should report directly to their classroom at 07:25. New Primary students will have been shown the locations of their homerooms during the New Student / Family Orientation. New Primary School students (and parents) who were not able to attend the New Family Orientation should report directly to the Primary School Office. All Secondary School students should report directly to their advisors at the start of the day before heading to the PAC for a welcome assembly. Staff will be present to help students find their advisor’s rooms. If a student is not sure where to go, he/she can ask any faculty member. New and Returning Parent Welcome Coffee AISL will host an informal welcome coffee and tea morning for all new and returning parents on Tuesday, August 8th at 07:30 in front of the Main Office. This is a great opportunity to make connections with new and returning parents and to re-establish previous connections. AISL has had a very active and dynamic PTA, and this coffee morning will provide an excellent opportunity to network with other parents. Please stop by and say hello after you drop off your children. Class Lists/Student Schedules All returning primary students have been informed of their class placement via email. Final class lists will be posted on the boards in front of the library on August 4th to reflect any new students who have joined the class. New families are requested to please check their child's class placement when they arrive for the New Family Orientation. Final class lists will also be posted on the Parent Portal section of the website at the end of the first school week so that families will have access to an updated list. Secondary School student schedules are available through ManageBac. If you have forgotten your login details or have not yet received them, please contact Kathleen Bowin at [email protected]. Drop-Off/Pick-Up Primary School students can be dropped off and picked up at the Primary School waiting hut at the top of the Primary School parking area, while Secondary School students can be dropped off and picked up at the lower Secondary School parking lot. If you are dropping off Secondary School children only, please use the Secondary parking lot; it is much less congested. If your child in Grades 4-12 is not taking the bus, please arrange to meet him/her at one of these points. Primary and Secondary students who ride the bus will be shown to the relevant bus pick-up points. ELC and students in Grades 1-3 must be collected directly from their classroom. Parking Stickers Please note that all cars will be required to have a current AISL parking sticker to enter the campus. These are renewed every year. Every AISL family is given two parking stickers with the option of buying additional ones for K10 each. Please collect your parking stickers from the Main Office/Reception, the Secondary School Office, or the Primary School Office during the first week of school. Please remove any old parking stickers from your vehicle. School Supplies and iPads The Primary School provides students with school supplies. Primary students will not be required to bring in school supplies apart from their book bag, pencils and pens, a healthy snack and lunch, a re-useable water bottle, and a sun hat. Secondary students are expected to acquire supplies and grade level supply lists are posted on the parent portal of the AISL website. All items on the list are available in Lusaka, either through the school store or at shops in town. Teachers expect all students to have required supplies by the end of their first week of school. The School Store is located next to the Primary School Tuck Shop. The Secondary School will begin distributing iPads (Grades 6-9) and laptops (Grades 10-12) during the second week of school. New students entering the Diploma Program will receive a laptop during the first few days of school. Students will receive an iPad or laptop, after they, along with their parents, sign an AISL iPad/Laptop User Agreement. More information about iPads and laptops will be forthcoming. PE/Sport Kits PE teachers will issue one PE Kit free of charge to each student in the Primary and Secondary Schools during the first week of school. The kit consists of a yellow dry-fit shirt with the AISL logo and a pair of black shorts. Please note that students will be required to wear this kit for PE lessons, along with appropriate athletic footwear. Parents may purchase an additional PE Kit at the School Store. Secondary students will be provided time before and after their PE classes to change in our out of their PE uniforms. They should not wear their uniform during other class times. School Store Hours The School Store Hours during the first week of school are as follows: Monday – Thursday: 07:30-08:30 Friday: 07:30-08:00 and 12:30-13:00 Food Service and Water AISL has a canteen/tuck shop operated by Sunflower Kitchen on each campus. The canteen provides light snacks, sandwiches and beverages during break times and a hot meal, sandwiches, and beverages during lunch. Their menu is posted weekly in the Leopard’s Tale newsletter. Students must bring a re-usable water bottle. AISL will provide students with filtered water located in dispensers that will be placed around campus. Consequently, the school will not sell water or other beverages in disposable plastic bottles. Please note that the AISL Canteen does not grant credit to students. Primary School students who forget their money may speak with their teacher or go to the Primary Office to arrange a loan. Thank you, in advance, for providing your children with enough money on a daily/weekly basis to purchase lunch and snacks.
