What I’m excited about this week…
0 Comments
Our rugby team traveled to Simba International school in Ndola this past weekend to compete in the 7’s Rugby tournament. Our boys played against some very tough teams and ended the day in 6th place out of 10 teams. Well done to the coaches and students for putting in their best effort under tough conditions.
The Diploma class of 2018 completed the Mock Exams this week. The exams are designed to simulate the real DP Exam testing conditions. The May DP exams will take place in the PAC Gallery from April 30 to May 18.
AISL secondary students learned about citizen journalism, satire, and spoken word poetry with special guest author / artist Samm Farai Monro from Zimbabwe. Our week began with an opening assembly for middle school students followed by one for secondary students. Mr. Monro met and worked with every grade level (6-12) across the week and MC'd and performed at both the Middle School Coffee House and the High School Coffee House. Mr. Monro and primary school visiting author Erica Perl also met with parents Tuesday morning to share information about the work they do. Many secondary students performed for the first time with encouragement from Mr. Monro and all have new material that they will hopefully share at our next coffee houses!
Dear AISL community members, I can’t believe this wonderful week is coming to an end! I was told that the people I would meet in Zambia would be among the most kind, friendly, and generous in the world, and it has been true. I have also been impressed by the level of creativity, collaborative spirit, and sense of humor shown by the AISL primary school kids. And it has been such a joy to be immersed in a school community that so clearly values the creative process and supports student expression. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit AISL (and Zambia), and I thank you all for welcoming me so warmly. During the week, I visited every primary school classroom, including ELC, and I did book-based projects with students in K-5. In kindergarten, kids wrote and drew sequels to FEROCIOUS FLUFFITY. In first grade, I was treated to a presentation of COLDylocks and the Three Polar Bears and many other uniquely fractured fairy tales. In second grade, we had a “taboo” poetry slam (writing without using the most obvious words) based on DOTTY. In third grade, I met a menagerie of one-of-a-kind “practice pets” –unicorns, a giraffe, pigs, and more – inspired by WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU O.J. And in fourth and fifth grade, we did dramatic readings of many new works of capybara-centric student theater (based on THE CAPYBARA CONSPIRACY). I wanted to leave a little gift to say thanks, so I created the attached handout. It summarizes my writing philosophy, which I emphasized with the kids all week (ask them to show you the three “Lucy rules” of writing and you’ll see). I am hoping it will be of use to kid and adult writers alike. Also, if you’d like to purchase a signed book, please see Jill Daley at the library.
Well done to the Grade 4 students for sharing their amazing creative talents. Inspired by their unit of inquiry on explorers and their background knowledge about Greek gods, the Grade 4 students put together a wonderful performance on Friday that included acting, storytelling, dancing, singing - all made possible by their creative script writing. Weeks of collaboration, both in small groups and as part of a larger group with both classes working together, enabled the students to integrate their original ideas into an overall story about four time travellers visiting an old museum. Throughout the story, the time travellers are given the gifts of knowledge, thinking, open-mindedness, courage, and inquiry. Thank you to Ms. Melodie Hausman and Ms. Natalie Coombs for coordinating the project. Below are some highlights from the performance.
