Jenn Caldwell, our Primary Counsellor, and Noa Mor, an AISL parent, would like to invite our Primary families to join them in the newly formed Primary Parent Group! They will facilitate regularly scheduled discussions as outlined below. The first gathering will be on Friday, 22 September, from 07:30 - 08:30 in the Protea Room. The discussion topic will focus on 'being assertive and using boundaries to help our children succeed' and here is a great article to initiate the discussion! Future discussions will include: 6 October: Building compassion and empathy in our children 3 November: Stress management strategies 17 November: Developmental stages of children (and adults!) If there is a particular topic you would like to learn more about, please let us know. We hope to see many of you on 22 September!

We are excited to be organising the 3rd Annual Ski Trip to Verbier, Switzerland, taking place during the school holidays, leaving 30 March and returning 7 April 2018. This trip is open to students from Grade 6 to 11. The trip is run by a well established organisation called Les Elfes (http://leselfes.com/), who are in charge of all the lessons, activities, meals, accommodation, while in Switzerland.
All parents of interested students are invited to join a ski trip presentation this Thursday, 14 September in the Library, beginning at 07:30. On 7-8 September, our upper Primary students had an opportunity to work with students from the John Mackenzie School in Botswana as part of a music exchange during their performing arts lessons. On Friday, all of Primary had the opportunity to see a performance from the students during a PALS assembly. Using instruments, voice and movement, the students from the John Mackenzie school captivated the audience with their beautiful music and storytelling.
The AISL Board of Directors will hold their first open board meeting on Monday, 11 September at 18:00 in the Protea Tree Conference Room. All members of the AISL parent association are welcome to attend. The items on the agenda are as follows:
Dear Members of the AISL Parent Association: The AISL Board would like to thank all of the parents, teachers, and administrators who came out to our first “Meet the Board’ welcome back event in August. Good conversations, good drink, and good food was enjoyed by all (including a few lurking kids!). The Board wishes to continue its efforts to further improve communication with and participation from the Association and gather more input and have greater transparency via events such as this. With this in mind we will now have “open” board meetings each month and the entire Association is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings. We plan to hold open meetings from 18:00 to approximately 19:00. We are hopeful this earlier time will better suit Association members. On this – and all Board matters – we very much value parent feedback. In open meetings, the Board typically gets updates on important aspects of school operations such as the curriculum, budget performance, upcoming events, or new initiatives. The Board is also apprised of upcoming decisions it will face such as construction planning and progress, policy updates, and other issues pertinent to the operation of the school. In all of these type discussions, members of the Association will be afforded the opportunity by the Board Chair to provide input into discussion items. The Board values this input. Once discussion items are closed and are brought to vote, whether at the same or a subsequent meeting, the Board members alone vote on decision items. After open sessions, the Board will generally have a “closed’ session to discuss issues which are of a confidential nature, such as those pertaining to personnel. The Association will continue to have the Annual General Meeting ( the AGM is primarily to present to the Audited Accounts to the Association) during first semester and the Extraordinary General Meeting (the EGM is generally for election of new members) during second semester. Dates for these and all other open Board meetings will be advertised in the Leopard’s Tale. The Board intends to have regular representation at Tuesday morning parent information sessions as much as possible and will also plan another late afternoon social event similar to the welcome back event. This will give Association members further opportunities to engage with individual Board members and for the Board to increase its awareness of Association concerns and hopefully Association praise, where they feel the school is being successful. As always, we very much encourage, welcome, and look forward to your input. This includes both positive feedback and constructive advice on how we can all further improve our fantastic school. Sincerely, Frank Monticello Chair, AISL Board of Directors We have a small but enthusiastic group of Grade 3-5 students on our AISL Green Team. These great kids care deeply about our planet Earth and want to help our school become a more environmentally friendly place. Our next action project is to make signs to post at the Friday Market and Tuck Shop that encourage everyone to bring reusable containers for purchased food!
